Course Details

Throughout the course, you will be instructed in different styles of Carnatic singing. However, to begin with, students will be taught different vocal exercises to help master the range of Carnatic vocal sounds.

Weeks one through eight will focus on five key techniques:

  1. Saralivarisai. These are basic Sargam exercises, used to build on or improve a student's knowledge of Swaras.
  2. Jandavarisai. While these are also Sargam exercises, there is the addition of double notes. These effectively improve both the clarity of singing as well as the dynamics.
  3. Melsthayi. This technique is used to improve both the student's range and ability to sing higher notes with ease.
  4. Thattuvarisai. The exercise helps by singing high and low notes which jump randomly. These exercise notes vary in their combinations, which when mastered, can help a student hit any note with ease.
  5. Alankarams. These are different combinations of Swaras which will aid the student in mastering the art of Sargam combinations.

Throughout weeks 9 to 16, students will be guided through 8 simple songs called geetams, all based on swaram and Sahityam in a song like structure, with the view to further the student's learning toward keertanams. Finally, in weeks 17 to 24, student's will learn Varnams, a higher level of song-based structures which also include Sahityam and Swaram.
