Bharatanatyam Dance Lessons for Children

Q: Can students of all age enroll to learn the dance form? Are there any gender restrictions?

Girls aged 6 or above can join this course. Men interested to learn have to be scheduled in a different batch.

Q: Do students need the attire and accessories needed for Bharatnatyam to start on the basic course?

They do not need it at the beginning. Dressing up for the dance form will be taught at a later stage.

Q: Will the students be educated on the history of the dance form?

Yes, there will be theory sessions which will speak about the history of the dance form.

Q: Do the students get evaluated?

Yes, there will be periodical assessment to evaluate the students.

Q: Do you provide students with additional course material apart from the notes and live demonstration?

Students will receive, theory notes, PDF and referential links on YouTube.

Q: Any specific expectations from students enrolling?

Students enrolling have to be punctual to the class.

Q: What if the student is unable to attend an upcoming class?

The student is required to inform the teacher about his absence from a particular session, two days before the class. In such a case, the teacher will reschedule the class and conduct the rescheduled class on or before the end (i.e. Saturday) of the ensuing week or such other time as may be mutually decided between the teacher and the student. In case the student misses to give two days prior notice about his absence to the teacher, then the decision to conduct another class for that student is completely based on the teacher’s discretion.

Q: What if the teacher wishes to reschedule a class?

In case the teacher is unavailable for the scheduled class, he/she will inform the students two days before the class. The teacher will conduct the rescheduled class on or before the end (i.e. Saturday) of the ensuing week or such other time as may be mutually decided between the teacher and the student.

About the Course

This basic course of Bharatanatyam for children (age 6 and above) will train the enrolled students on the nuances of essential postures, foot movements, hand gestures, and facial expressions that form the core of the Bharatanatyam dance form. The curriculum will include the following:

Introduction to the concept of Adavus (foot movements)
10 Fundamental foot movements of Bharatanatyam in three basic postures- standing posture, half-seated posture, and fully seated posture
10 of the 28 of the Asamyukta hasta (hand gestures) or mudras
10 of the 23 Samyukta hasta (hand gestures) or mudras
Ability to perform foot movements and hand gestures in sync

About the Teacher: Identified as a child prodigy after entering dance school at the tender age of 3 and a half years, Rekha Raju has come a long way. After refining her skills as a Bharatanatyam dancer Dr Rekha Raju has devoted most of her time to Mohiniattam, a dance form popular in Kerala.

Raised in Bangalore, the gifted artist now runs her dance school in Bangalore. Amidst this hustle and bustle, Dr Rekha Raju completed her PhD in dance from Mysore University studying Margi and desi techniques of Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattam.

Her apprentice and assistant faculty trainer, Keerthi Uday is currently pursuing her higher studies at Mount Carmel College (Bangalore, India). She has been learning the dance form Bharatanatyam at Nrithya Dhama Temple of Fine Arts, since she was six, under the guidance of Dr Rekha Raju.

She has also completed her Prarambhik, and Praveshik Purna exams in Bharatanatyam from Bhartiya Sangeeth Prasarak Mandal (Pune), with flying colours. Apart from Bharatanatyam, she is also learning the dance forms Mohiniyatam under Dr. Rekha Raju, Thalam, and Nattuvangam under Sri. Jagdeesh Janardhanan.

She is one of the faculty members of Dr Rekha Raju’s troupe and has assisted her in several workshops and major dance festivals. Keerthi aims to assist and dedicate her knowledge to the enrolled students.
