Course Summary

Over the course of 15 weeks, Steven Dearing will teach students to advance the art of fingerstyle techniques to allow the student to play Classical and Spanish pieces. When playing with the fingers (instead of a plectrum/pick) the player can strike non-adjacent strings allowing for voicing of chords and playing a melody with a chord, as opposed to only strumming across adjacent strings. This allows for a solo effect, where the player can accompany themselves.

Course Details

During this course, the student will learn about technique, tone production, and how to better their reading skills. Students will also learn techniques that require strings to be tweaked with the hands and fingers, which results in optimized ergonomics and freedom of expression. Students will work with Steven on tone production to discover how the ideal sound can be produced.  Students will advance their knowledge of score reading and how to better their sight-reading skills. By learning to read music or notation better, students can broaden their range of musical skills which will ultimately improve their ability to play the instrument. By the end of the course, students will be learning and practising a piece of music until it is performance-ready. This will teach them about expression through dynamics, phrasing, etc.

Abut the Teacher: Steven Dearing was raised in Windsor, Ontario, where he began his journey into classical guitar after teaching himself to play the electric guitar. The ipassio Edge

Students enrolling for this course on ipassio can be sure that they receive individual attention from the teacher, as the class strength is limited to 1 or 2 students. It also gives teachers the opportunity, to gauge their students progress in-depth and make changes whenever and wherever required, to ensure the student gets the maximum out of this course. Since this course is detailed, students get the advantage of learning intricate details about this art form. The limited strength of the class also ensures that there is a strong bond between the students and their teacher clearing out any inhibitions that the student might have. The sustained guidance available from the teacher ensures that the student does not deviate from set goals or targets. Learning from a revered, experienced exponent of this art form, through the long duration of this course, keeps the student inspired and motivated to achieve more.

Course Specific Benefits

Learning a non-tangible subject like music is challenging enough, let alone without a good instructor. He is very passionate about this art form, and his students have achieved the highest distinctions, from placing in the top 3 of international competitions to going onto graduate programs. Many former pupils are now teaching others, which is the highest honour for him.

What if a student is unable to attend an upcoming class?
Answer

In such a case, the teacher will reschedule the class and conduct the rescheduled class on or before the end (i.e. Saturday) of the ensuing week or such other time as may be mutually decided between the teacher and the student. In case the student misses to give two days prior notice about his absence to the teacher, then the decision to conduct another class for that student is completely based on teacher’s discretion.
