About the Course

A holistically designed curriculum has been designed for this course that equips students with the essential skills and knowledge required to embark on their musical journey. The highlights include -

  • The course commences with fundamental voice training, which includes a series of breathing exercises, voice stretching exercises, and fluidity exercises.
  • Students are encouraged to cultivate control over their breath and vocal range, enhancing their capacity to express emotions through music.
  • The core content of the curriculum revolves around defining and comprehending key musical elements such as Sangeet (music), Swara (musical note), Aaroh Avaroh (ascending and descending scales), Saptak (octave), Nad (sound), Mela (musical scale), Raga (melodic framework), Jati (rhythmic pattern), Alap (introductory improvisation), Tan (musical phrase), Pakar (elaboration), Sam (beat), Tali (clap), and Khali (empty beat).
  • The curriculum further delves into the nuances of Shuddha (pure) and Vikrit (modified) Swaras (musical notes).
  • One of the pivotal aspects covered in the course is the concept of "That," which refers to the tonal framework or scale of a composition. Students are introduced to different types of "That" and become well-versed in the features of three major "That"s. By the end of this section, students can confidently sing the arohan (ascending scale) and avarohan (descending scale) of any of the three "That"s, demonstrating their grasp of this critical musical element.
  • The curriculum progresses to Alankar, which explores the intricate patterns and embellishments in Indian music. Students learn the definition of Alankar, its basic format, and how to create Alankars. They are expected to sing five different Alankars, including three two-digit and two three-digit Alankars, while mastering their arohan and avarohan.
  • Students also familiarize themselves with the concept of Sawar-Mallika, a musical composition in Indian classical music. They learn what constitutes a Swarmalika, its format, and how to sing one effectively. This section empowers students to perform a Swarmalika with confidence.
  • The curriculum then introduces students to the Ragas, their classifications, and the defining features. Raga Yaman will be introduced at this level.
  • The course takes a detour to explore the Indian taal (rhythmic) system, where students grasp the concepts of taal (rhythm), laya (tempo), Taali (clap), Khali (empty beat), and Sum (first beat).
  • In addition to classical music, students are introduced to the world of Indian semi-classical music through bhajans.
  • The curriculum also embraces contemporary music, allowing students to explore the modern facets of Indian music.
  • As the course nears its conclusion, students engage in revision and demonstration sessions. This phase allows them to consolidate their learning, and seek clarification on any doubts. These demonstrations provide a platform for students to showcase their progress and receive valuable feedback.
