Course Details

Over the course of 12 weeks, each 1-hour session will help to improve the control of the muscles needed for singing using a variety of techniques. There are 5 basic steps that will be covered during the student's vocal gym and voice training: Hearing, Control of breath, Practice (Riyaz), and Physical and mental fitness.  Students will be required to exercise their voice daily, which not only helps them to achieve better vocal clarity and culture but will also help to strengthen and protect their voice. They will learn how to sing vowels correctly and with proper annunciation, and develop a base within their voice.

Students will learn Swara patterns and how to customize and practice these in accordance with their own unique voice. Kharaj practices and breathing exercises will also be taught and should be practiced daily. Surbhi will also employ different western methods of voice training including bel canto among others. Students will discover their own vocal range and how to use their voice in different ways, depending on the song. They will gain a deep understanding of the Seven Notes used in Indian music and learn to sing notations. This course is open to all musical levels and can be undertaken by anyone wanting to learn the music.

FAQs

Question
I've never sung before, will this be the right standard for me?
Answer
Absolutely, I take students on who are starting to discover their singing voices to people who have sung for many years and want extra guidance. I will help you every step of the way.
Question
Can I start learning singing after the age of 60?
Answer
Yes of course! There is no age limits to start singing. Music is beyond limitations. Even it will be more joyful if a person starts singing after fulfilling all the major responsibilities of his/her life.
Question
How much time should a student enrolling for this course practice everyday?
Answer
This course will require practice time outside of lessons. Time spent practicing may vary from 15 minutes per day to an hour, depending on a student’s level of interest. Students who wish to become professional musicians will need more hours of practice per day using a different set of exercises and materials than students who are seeking to learn music as a hobby. Detailed structure of practice for each student will be discussed and explained during class.
Question
What if a student is unable to attend an upcoming class?
Answer
The student is required to inform the teacher about his absence from a particular session, two days prior to the class. In such a case, the teacher will reschedule the class and conduct the rescheduled class on or before the end (i.e. Saturday) of the ensuing week or such other time as may be mutually decided between the teacher and the student. In case the student misses to give two days prior notice about his absence to the teacher, then the decision to conduct another class for that student is completely based on teacher’s discretion.
Question
What if the teacher wishes to reschedule a class?
Answer
In case the teacher is unavailable for the scheduled class, he/she will inform the students two days prior to the class. The teacher will conduct the rescheduled class on or before the end (i.e. Saturday) of the ensuing week or such other time as may be mutually decided between the teacher and the student.
Question
How long will the teacher take to revert to a query raised after class hours?
Answer
Students should get a response within 24 hours if the teacher is not preoccupied or travelling.
