Course Summary

This course introduces you to Bharatanatyam - one of the most graceful Indian classical dance forms that originated in Tamil Nadu. The intricate footwork, expressive gestures, and rhythmic movements of Bharatanatyam together create the most enchanting visual narratives. This course is a step-by-step guide to learning the fundamentals of this dance form. 

The students will learn the basic postures, hand gestures (mudras), and footwork (adavus) that form the building blocks of the dance form. They will also be introduced to the concept of rhythm (tala) and learn to synchronize their movements with the accompanying tala.

The course will focus on developing body awareness, coordination, and flexibility through warm-up exercises and basic dance movements. Students will learn to maintain proper body alignment and balance while executing various steps and poses. Throughout the course, students will be exposed to the rich cultural and historical context of Bharatanatyam.

About the Course

This course will cover the following aspects:

  • The terminologies of Bharatanatyam.
  • The basic postures as well as different sets of steps starting from very basic footwork "Tattadavus" till advanced steps (adavus) like Sarikkal adavu.
  • Different hand gestures (mudras) with meanings like Asamyukta Hasta Viniyoga & Samyukta Viniyoga with their uses and meanings.
  • Introduction to different Pada Bhedas, Drishti Bheda, and Griva Bheda and their application in different adavus.
  • Students will be able to recite the talas associated with Bharatanatyam and also all the steps they will learn.
  • They will also be able to show and recite the talam in the traditional way by putting it on hand.
  • The students will be trained in exercises and stretchings to boost body flexibility. It will help to make their postures more clear.

About the Teacher

Sanchi Gupta has been associated with Bharatanatyam for a span of 15 years, cultivating her passion for this dance form from a very young age. She received official training in Bharatanatyam at Shriram Bhartiya Kala Kendra in Delhi, under the expert guidance of Guru Justin McCarthy in the Kalakshetra Bani style.

As an accomplished artist, Sanchi has proudly represented Shriram Bhartiya Kala Kendra at numerous prestigious events and festivals in India and abroad. Her talent has graced various cities in Fiji as she represented India through captivating performances. She has also been honored with the opportunity to perform at auspicious events such as Maha Kumbh, ASEAN Summit 2019, World Culture Festival, Geeta Mahotsava, Taj Mahotsava, and many more.

With her vast experience as a seasoned performer and teacher, Sanchi has been invited to serve as a judge for numerous dance competitions held at schools and other platforms. Noteworthy among them are the inter-school competition, CREO International 2019 & 2020 organized by Nehru World School in Ghaziabad, and a Folk Dance Competition organized by Amar Ujala on the occasion of Independence Day in 2019.

Sanchi's dedication to spreading the art of Bharatanatyam extends beyond performances and competitions. She imparts her knowledge and expertise to students in India and abroad through online classes, ensuring the legacy of this beautiful dance form is carried forward.
