Course Details
This long term course for beginners wishing to learn the Indian percussion instrument tabla, will be an extensive course in basics and elementary compositions. This course will familiarise the students with the different parts of the tabla such as chat, syahi, maidan, gajra etc. Further on students will be taught the posture when sitting in front of the tabla. Subsequently, they would be taught the hand positioning on the tabla. The training on playing the tabla will commence with the introduction of different bols or syllables. Students will be taught the exact hand positioning and the finger striking at different places on the face of the tabla to produce particular sounds referred to as bols or syllables. Further on in the course students will in the guidance of the teacher, go through extensive practice to master playing the syllables or bols on the two drums also known as the dahina (one that is placed on the right side of the tabla player and is used for treble) and bahina (one that sits on the left and is used for bass) that constitute the tabla set. The exercise will provide students the understanding on the finger movement and the different bols emanating from the different drums, in a tabla set. Students hereon will practice the different bols in phrases also known as theka, an arrangement of common bols played on the tabla. Students through the duration of this course will be taught finger and wrist exercises to erase the fatigue and strain caused due to playing the tabla.
