This beginner sarod course in its earliest chapters of the curriculum will introduce the enrolled students to the sarod as a musical instrument in the musical genre of Hindustani Classical Music, sharing information on the development of the instrument, through the years. It will then teach students the different technical terms or connotations used in context to the Hindustani style of music. Further on, it will familiarise students with sarod tuning as well as the knowledge of writing musical notations. Students will next learn the seating posture and the way to hold the sarod, how to handle the instrument, and the basic techniques of playing the instrument. Students during this time will also learn the hand and finger movements on the sarod. Moving on further into the course, students will be taught the octaves such as Mandira and madhyantar. Further on, the students will be taught to practice the sarod and will also learn the basics of three rhythms or taals on the sarod, namely, Teen taal, Rupak, and Ektaal. At the culmination of this course, students will learn how to play Sarod or any other Indian stringed instrument of their choice.
About the instructor: Dr. Troilee Dutta is an internationally acclaimed Indian Classical instrument ‘Sarod’ player. She received the most coveted training from Pandit Kamal Mallick (disciple of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan), Pt. Sanjoy Bandopadhaya, and Pt. Partho Sarathy (disciple of 'Bharat Ratna' Pt. Ravi Shankar). She is also a National Scholar in Sarod and a graded artist of All India Radio. She has been awarded 'Sangeet Ratna' from Bangiya Sangeet Parishad. Troilee is a Ph.D. in Sarod and First Class First in M.A. from Rabindra Bharati University. She has performed in many prestigious musical soirees in India and abroad and has great experience in teaching.
The course is suited for all those interested in learning to play the Hindustani classical style of music on the sarod. The content of the course has been designed in such a manner that though it uses sarod as the stringed instrument to demonstrate playing of Hindustani classical music, the students undergoing the course can conveniently play the type of music on any stringed instrument of their choice.

No pre-knowledge is required. The very basic requirements of this beginner course include: The student to be in possession of a sarod and a plectrum (pick) or a dava. Students with some know-how about Hindustani music vocals will be at an advantage. Students need to strictly adhere to practicing the instrument for a minimum of one hour daily to realize their learning stage and so that they can track their own progress.
