Course Details

This course provides students with a dual advantage of learning the Hindustani slide guitar as well as the acoustic guitar. During the tenure of the course spanning 5 weeks with 2 classes lined up every week, students will be taught the slide guitar basics, which will include techniques of left and right-hand coordination, setting or balancing the tone of the guitar and holding the slide guitar.  Further on they would also be trained to practise playing Mir, Gamak  Murki and Palta also known as Alankara. The course through its progression will have assignments for students to complete. The assignments will help the teacher gauge the progress students have made on topics that have been covered. The next topics covered in the course will touch on ragas like Yemen and Bhupali. Students will then be trained on a couple Bandish, Cheez or Gat which are fixed, melodic compositions in Hindustani vocal or instrumental music. It is set in a specific raga, performed with rhythmic accompaniment by a tabla or pakhawaj, a steady drone, and melodic accompaniment by a sarangi, violin or harmonium.

About Rhitom Sarkar: Rhythm is a companion for Rhitom, whose very name rhymes with ‘rhythm’. He started learning the guitar at the age of nine, under the guidance of Pt. Debashish Bhattacharya, continuing for ten long years. After a brief stint under the guidance of Mr. Debotosh Dey, a guitarist playing for the All India Radio, Rhitom joined another stalwart Pt. Shyamalal Chatterjee, a sitar exponent to satiate his desire for music and learning. He went on further to educate himself on hindustani music by training under tabla maestros, Shubhankar Banerjee and Pt. Samar Saha. He continued his learning odyssey training under Pt. Ajoy Chakroborty (Vocal), Pt. Budhadeb Dasgupta (Sarod). His inclination to master the revered music forms of both the east and west saw him receive taleem in incorporating Classical Music in Spanish (Western) Guitar under the guidance of music composer-director Sri Madhu Mukherjee. The amount of training Rhitom received is in itself proof of the dedication the young man has had to master music, and so he has. Rhitom has his career cut through multiple albums and won accolades and awards in the dozens such as the "SUR-O-MANI" Award from Sur Singar Samsad, Mumbai, "A Grade" Artist from AIR, prestigious "Trisaptika Kala Ratna Award" and "Sangeet Yuva Ratna Award" from Art and Cultural Trust of India. He was also awarded Senior Scholarship under the Government of India, Ministy of Culture and State Scholarship of Rajya Sangeet Academy. He is an empanelled artist by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre (EZCC). He now spends his time training students from across the globe, sharing from the immense stockpile of knowledge he has acquired from his revered gurus.
