Course Details

This course on Konnakol or carnatic style of using vocal syllables to create rhythmic compositions will enhance the students understanding of Konnakol building upon the foundation created in the basics course. This course will further delve into the tala system and further explore the solfeges or the alphabet system in Konnakol such as Tha, Dhi, Thom, Nam, Kita, Dhak Kita inside the tala frame. Tala is supposed to be the rhythmic pattern or structure that defines a composition. Students in this course learn two basic talas namely adi tala and rupak tala. Adi tala also referred to as primary clap is one of the most popular talas in carnatic music. It is also referred to as chaturasra-jaati triputa tala. The other tala that students get familiarised with is rupaka tala. Students will be taught traditional compositions based on the mentioned talas to improve on their vocal percussion skills, through regular practice of taught compositions. This course will teach students to do a poetry in Konnakol not just with syllables but with the number system as well.
