The guru in this case will share all the knowledge he embodies about playing the sitar to his disciple or shishya. Course Details

This course will guide students to further their hindustani musical knowledge from being a novice to becoming trained to achieve a proficient level. This course would begin with creating a strong foundation for the students by making students diligently practice Alankaras and Sargams and a few ragas such as Bhupali, Yaman, Bilawal and Kafi. Further on in the course students will be introduced to 10 thaats or musical scale based ragas. Thaat is a mode in northern Indian or Hindustani music. Thaat always have seven different pitches, called swara and are a basis for the organization and classification of ragas in North Indian classical music.  Students will get familiarised to the various techniques such as meend which refers to the glide from one note to another on the instrument or vocally. This course will teach students effects, improvisations, gayaki or north indian vocal music and improvisation of notes. Further on students will be taught singing and tuning their sitars as per their vocal notes. Moving on students will get to practise layakari or rhythmic play. Next up, students get to practice Vilambit or  an introductory slow tempo, or laya, between 10 and 40 beats per minute, used in the performance of a raga in Hindustani classical music. Further on this course will shed light and encourage the practice of drut gat and taan kari.

In the guidance of Pandit Manilal Nag, Subrata De flourished with his art imbibing special capabilities training in Dhrupad and Gayaki  style, Tankarin, Alapang, Gatkari, the identifying features of Bishnupur Gharana. Through the years Subrata De released multiple album and vowed audiences not just in India but world over. A listed artist with All India Radio, he is member of multiple panels such as the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, Zonal Cultural Centre (Dept. of Culture) Govt, of India, Sangeet Natak Akademi, Sangeet Natak Parishad. His growing stature as a sitar maestro sees him travel around the world to train artists eager to learn the sitar.

How much time should a person practice each day?
Answer
Apart from attending classes and practicing in the company of the guru for a minimum of three times a week, students should invest one hour everyday for practice. They should watch the maestros of hindustani classical music perform as much as time permits, in order to learn intricate details about the style of music.

What are the expectations from students enrolling for this course?
Answer
Students should have a spiritual leaning. They should be dedicated towards learning hindustani classical music. They should have love for the nature and have an appreciative view on life.

Are there students who are tough to be taught?
Answer
Students who are rude and do not respect the guru-shishya, tradition are a misfit for this course.

What if the student is unable to attend an upcoming class?
Answer
The student is required to inform the teacher about his absence from a particular session, a week prior to the class. In such a case, the teacher will reschedule the class and conduct the rescheduled class on or before the end (i.e. Saturday) of the ensuing week or such other time as may be mutually decided between the teacher and the student. In case the student misses to give two days prior notice about his absence to the teacher, then the decision to conduct another class for that student is completely based on teacher’s discretion.

What if the teacher wishes to reschedule class?
Answer
In case the teacher is unavailable for the scheduled class, he/she will inform the students one week prior to the class. The teacher will conduct the rescheduled class on or before the end (i.e. Saturday) of the ensuing week or such other time as may be mutually decided between the teacher and the student.

What extra course material can the student expect from the teacher?
Answer
Apart from the live demonstration and training, students will be provided with English language books about hindustani classical music, audio clips for 30 ragas to cope up with notations and other PDF files.

How much time does it take a student to perform in front of an audience?
Answer
Students need to practice for a minimum of 2 to 3 years to be able to perform a ten to 15 minute solo performance on stage.
