Basics of Sufi Vocals for Beginners covers the various traditional Sufiana kalams, including the works of many poets from ancient, medieval, and modern times. Throughout the duration of this course, students will work through the process of learning the correct pronunciation, as it is an essential educational building block for the aspiring Sufi vocal artist. Students will train in the many notes of kalam and receive guided practice to ensure proficiency in rhythm as well as pronunciation and melody. Instructor Sonal Shah’s disciplined training in the Urdu language affords students the opportunity to understand the complicated nuances of this language, which adds to the study of Sufi music via the translations and instruction of a master.On the successful completion of this course, students will be able to perform Sufi vocal compositions and enjoy a complete understanding of the beauty of music through Sufi kalams.

About Sonal Shah: Sonal Shah is a well-known Sufi Singer. She is classically trained, with a postgraduate degree in Music from Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Women’s University (SNDT). Shah is a National Award title holder “Sur-Mani” for Indian Classical Music and has been performing as an artist in All India Radio since last 30 years. Previously, Sonal Shah was invited to an exclusive interview by Pakistani radio channel Dhamaal for her service as a Sufi and Ghazal singer. In addition to her musical studies, Shah has also become fluent in the Urdu language to ensure a complete and deep understanding of the Urdu poetry as it contributes to Ghazal music.

It also gives teachers the opportunity, to gauge their students progress in depth and make changes whenever and wherever required, to ensure the student gets the maximum out of this course. No prerequisite classes are required for students to enroll in this course; however, a basic understanding of music would be helpful. Attending students will need to know how to speak, read, and write Hindi. Students will also need a notebook and pen, but all other materials will be provided by the instructor.
