Beginners Vocal Basics and Exercises
This long-term course leads students through the basics of vocal development and training. Great for beginners and hobbyists with a desire to increase their skill level in singing, expert Hindustani classical vocalist Ayesha Mukherjee focuses on the fundamentals of the oldest musical tradition. During the course of a year of weekly one-on-one lessons, students will learn a variety of techniques and exercises, as well as musical theory fundamentals, necessary for vocal success and confidence.

Course Details
This year-long course begins with vocal strength training aimed at improving voice quality and endurance through practical exercises. Students will learn the identification of all 12 individual swaras/notes and their variations, as well as the identification of taal/rhythm and laya/tempo. Following the development of a foundation in the basics of vocal music, students will learn simple songs in Hindi with notation and taal, bhajans and bandishes in basic raagas. Students with an interest in progressing further may also learn the vocal styles of thumri, dadra and khayal.
About the teacher: Ayesha Mukherjee is a highly-trained and talented vocalist in Hindustani classical and semi-classical music. Mukherjee is a student of Shri Deborshee Bhattacharya and has previously trained under Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty and Pandit Ritesh Mishra of the Benaras Gharana tradition. With a history of prestigious awards and performances beginning from a young age, she is a renowned classical exponent in India. Mukerjee’s teaching style emphasises the technical and scientific, believing musical ability lies in the fundamentals. She says music to her is a clear picture and she strives to help her students build this ability to visualize the picture.

It also gives teachers the opportunity, to gauge their students progress in depth and make changes whenever and wherever required, to ensure the student gets the maximum out of this course. All that is required to enrol in this course is an interest in vocal music, the ability to take notes during lessons and the time to commit to weekly hour-long video lessons and individual practice. Lesson plans and progression through the course are tailored to each students’ level and style of learning. At the successful completion of this course, students will be able to sing their choice of compositions and melodies with technical proficiency and identify notation, taal and other concepts by ear. In addition, vocal training inspires confidence in any singer wanting to perform without fear of making mistakes in front of an audience.
