Bassoon for Beginners
Bassoon for Beginners takes place in one 45-minutes lesson each week over the duration of 10 weeks. This course, designed by instructor Monica Schwartz, is for students just beginning their musical career as well as developed musicians seeking a review of the basics. Students enrolled in this course will receive foundational instruction including bassoon anatomy and care, basic scales, and beginners bassoon music and will progress to more advanced topics including notation, rhythm, and style. Bassoon for Beginners is open to hobbyists and aspiring professional musicians alike.

Course Details
Instructor Schwartz will begin this course with lessons on bassoon anatomy and handling including anatomy, cleanliness, reed care, proper assembly and storage. Once students are confident with their instruments, the course will progress to include playing techniques, embouchure, fingering, pitch and vibrato. Learners will then begin to explore and practice the F and Bb scales. Instructor Schwartz will guide students through practice and impart proper practice techniques to ensure the success of each learner. Students who successfully complete this course can expect to play beginner songs including “In the Hall of the Mountain King”, and will be prepared to play solo or as part of an ensemble.
As a beginners course, there are no required prerequisites before enrollment. The required learning materials will be provided, however each student will need an instrument of their own and pen and paper for taking notes. Enrolling students will need to ensure they have the time to commit to the 30-minute online lessons, as well as the independent practice time required to master a new musical skill. Instructor Schwartz’s lesson plan is built to accomodate learners of all ages, no prior musical education necessary.
About the Teacher: Instructor Monica Schwartz attended the Peabody Conservatory of The Johns Hopkins University where she earned three undergraduate degrees in 2001, (Bassoon Performance, Music Education, and Music Composition). In 2014, Shwartz continued her musical career at Peabody and achieved her masters in Music Composition and Education as well. Schwartz gained her experience studying with musical exponents including; Linda Harwell, Terry Ewell, Truman Harris, and Barrick Stees. A regular freelancer, Schwartz performs occasionally as a solo artist or with her current chamber group Venteux. Schwartz has performed with many organizations including the Columbia Orchestra (2007-2012), Londontowne Symphony, Columbia Chamber Winds, and Gallery Winds. Today along with performing, Schwartz is ensuring the continuation of bassoon by teaching students in her own music studio, Orchard Music.Now, instructor Schwartz has extended her reach to include international students across the globe through her online bassoon courses.
Students enrolling for this course on ipassio can be sure that they receive individual attention from the teacher, as the class strength is limited to 1 or 2 students. It also gives teachers the opportunity, to gauge their students progress in depth and make changes whenever and wherever required, to ensure the student gets the maximum out of this course. Since this course is detailed, students get the advantage of learning intricate details about this art form. The limited strength of the class also ensures that there is a strong bond between the students and their teacher clearing out any inhibitions that the student might have. The sustained guidance available from the teacher ensures that the student does not deviate from set goals or targets. Students will master the basics of the bassoon setting them up for success. For those especially geared towards joining a performing ensemble: younger students will gain necessary skills to play with their school band and adults community ensembles.

- The student must have the required equipment: bassoon, bassoon reed.
- Prior to first lesson, the teacher will provide resources for buying a quality reed (very important!).
- Music and method materials will be provided digitally by the teacher during the course.
