Description

This course introduces beginners to Bharatanatyam, its meaning, and the precise movements involved in its expression. Students begin by learning the meaning behind Bharatanatyam and its three basic elements: Nritta, Nritya, and Natya. Students also learn the meanings behind the different types of movements; from samyuta hastas (two-hand gestures) and pada bheda (foot positions) todhrishti bheda (eye movements) and more. Expert performer and teacher Veena C.S. leads students through the recital of the jaatis, or rhythm patterns, associated with Bharatanatyam, and the meanings of various terms and concepts so that each student has a true understanding of the art form.

Veena C.S. leads students in basic physical exercises and poses before moving on to learning different sets of steps in Bharatanatyam, from the basic Tattadavu to the more advanced Sarikkal Adavu. At the successful completion of this course, students will be able to recite Sollu kattus of all adavus in tala and be able to perform a solo recital. This course can be up to or over a year long but, ultimately, course length depends on the progress and comfort of the student. Additionally, a thorough study of dance such as this course builds strength, confidence, and depth of expression that can enhance many areas of life. This course requires regular physical practice and weekly face-to-face sessions with the teacher.

FAQs

Question
Do the students need the attire and accessories needed for Bharatnatyam to start on the basic course?
Answer
They do not need it at the beginning. Dressing up for the dance form will be taught at a later stage.
Question
What if the student is unable to attend an upcoming class?
Answer
The student is required to inform the teacher about his absence from a particular session, two days prior to the class. In such a case, the teacher will reschedule the class and conduct the rescheduled class on or before the end (i.e. Saturday) of the ensuing week or such other time as may be mutually decided between the teacher and the student. In case the student misses to give two days prior notice about his absence to the teacher, then the decision to conduct another class for that student is completely based on teacher’s discretion.
