Bharatanatyam Dance For Beginners
This is a long-term course lasting one year that provides an in-depth avenue of study for students wanting to learn the classical Indian dance Bharatanatyam. Weekly lessons with a world-renowned expert cover the theory and practice of this ancient art form, developing a strong foundational knowledge of Bharatanatyam that goes beyond just the basics. Students learn the origins and meaning behind the dance, as well as selections from Abhinaya Darpanam, adavus, taala and multiple recital pieces.

Course Details
This course introduces beginners to Bharatanatyam, its meaning, and the precise movements involved in its expression. Students begin by learning the meaning behind Bharatanatyam and its three basic elements: Nritta, Nritya, and Natya. Students also learn the meanings behind the different types of movements; from samyuta hastas (two-hand gestures) and pada bheda (foot positions) todhrishti bheda (eye movements) and more. Expert performer and teacher Veena C.S. leads students through the recital of the jaatis, or rhythm patterns, associated with Bharatanatyam, and the meanings of various terms and concepts so that each student has a true understanding of the art form.
Veena C.S. leads students in basic physical exercises and poses before moving on to learning different sets of steps in Bharatanatyam, from the basic Tattadavu to the more advanced Sarikkal Adavu. At the successful completion of this course, students will be able to recite Sollu kattus of all adavus in tala and be able to perform a solo recital. This course can be up to or over a year long but, ultimately, course length depends on the progress and comfort of the student. Additionally, a thorough study of dance such as this course builds strength, confidence, and depth of expression that can enhance many areas of life. This course requires regular physical practice and weekly face-to-face sessions with the teacher.
About Ms. Veena Chikkanahalli Seshadri: From a young age, Veena Chikkanahalli Seshadri had a strong interest in dance, art, and drama. Throughout the 25 years of experience that followed, she has performed and taught Bharatanatyam all over the world. She trained professionally at the Kalakshetra College of Fine Arts, as well as with Guru Minal Prabhu and Guru Jayalakshmi Eshwar. Now a guru in her own right, she's a renowned dancer and choreographer who has been the recipient of numerous distinguished awards and achievements, including a grade A from Doordarshan, an Empanelled artist of ICCR, the Natya Mayuri title from Sadhana International Art and Yoga Festival in Beijing, and an honour by Sur Noopur, New Delhi in recognition of excellence in teaching. Veena C.S. is recognized as the embodiment of Bharatanatyam and she brings expertise and passion to each performance and lesson.
