Ghatam and Konnakol for Beginners
This course takes place over the duration of 52 weeks, including two sessions per week for a total of 104 sessions. During this intensive course, students will learn to feel the rhythmic pulse of sound from a Carnatic viewpoint, and learn to incorporate this rhythm into their favorite genres including jazz, fusion, and more. An expert instructor, Ghatam Karthick Subramaniam teaches the concepts of the South Indian Carnatic rhythm system by using Konnakol, the art of verbal percussion, in his interactive one-on-one sessions.

Course Details
During the duration of this course, students will learn basic Ghatam fingering patterns, exclusive Ghatam fingering techniques, the fundamental lessons of the four major talas, as well as the essential skills required of any musician for the successful recitation of the Ghatam Konnakol. In addition to these lessons, students of this course will also improve their listening skills and become well versed in tala exercises. This course helps to develop overall skills in musicianship as it relates to Carnatic tradition.
ABOUT THE TEACHER: Ghatam Karthick Subramaniam has achieved an MA in Music Philosophy as well as a PhD in Sanskrit from Ramakrishna Mission (RKM) Vivekananda College. He continued on to further his education with another MA in Indian Music from the University of Madras. Today, he performs in India and abroad playing music and presenting lectures on many musical topics. Leading by example, Subramaniam is still learning as a student of Sri. T.H. Vikku Vinayakram and Sri. T.H. Subash Chandran. Honored to be graded an ‘A-TOP’ artist by All India Radio, he is eager to ensure the tradition of Classical Indian Music continues into the next generation and to that end is currently serving as an instructor in addition to performing and study.
Students enrolling for this course on ipassio can be sure that they receive individual attention from the teacher, as the class strength is limited to 1 or 2 students. It also gives teachers the opportunity, to gauge their students progress in depth and make changes whenever and wherever required, to ensure the student gets the maximum out of this course. Since this course is detailed, students get the advantage of learning intricate details about this art form. The limited strength of the class also ensures that there is a strong bond between the students and their teacher clearing out any inhibitions that the student might have. The sustained guidance available from the teacher ensures that the student does not deviate from set goals or targets. Learning from a revered, experienced exponent of this art form, through the long duration of this course, keeps the student inspired and motivated to achieve more.
As a course for beginners, Ghatam and Konnakol for Beginners does not require students to complete a prerequisite course before enrollment. Students will, however, need pen and paper for taking notes, a desire to learn music, and time to dedicate to the weekly lessons. In addition to twice-weekly lessons, students are encouraged to engage in independent practice, a key component of any music lessons. Successful completion of this course will provide foundational knowledge of Ghatam and Konnokol and prepare the student to take their musical journey to the next level with an intermediate Ghatam or Konnakol course.
