About the Course

This course is for students who already know the basics of Hindustani Classical Vocal. You should know swaras, simple alankars, and a few easy songs (bandishes). In this level, we will grow your skills step by step so you can sing with more confidence and control. The highlights of the course are as follows -

  • We will start by warming up the voice properly. You will practice steady breath, clear sound, and correct pitch. We will review swaras to make sure every note is clean. Then we will move to bigger alankars. These will help your voice move smoothly and quickly without strain.
  • You will learn new bandishes at the intermediate level. We will sing them slowly at first, and then in a faster speed when you are ready. You will learn the meaning of the lyrics, the mood of the raga, and how to keep taal correctly while singing.
  • We will explore a few ragas in more depth. For each raga, you will learn its main notes, important phrases, and where to stop and rest your voice. You will practice singing aroh and avaroh, pakad, and common patterns that fit the raga.
  • You will also start simple improvisation. This includes small alaap to show the raga, short taans that are neat and in tune, and sargam passages that match the raga rules. We will keep these parts short and clear so you feel safe and steady.
  • Taal practice will be regular. You will clap and count common taals like Teentaal and Ektaal. You will learn how to enter on the right beat and finish properly. We will use a tanpura or shruti app and a tabla loop to help you keep the beat.
  • Every week, you will get small homework. This will include voice practice, alankar drills, raga patterns, and bandish revision. You will also listen to short recordings by good singers so you can hear the raga clearly and improve your taste.
  • By the end of the course, you should be able to sing a simple raga from start to finish with confidence. You will keep the taal properly, stay in tune, and show the raga’s mood. You will know how to add a small alaap, a simple taan, and a bit of sargam without forgetting the raga rules.
  • For daily practice, try this plan. Start with 5–7 minutes of long notes on Sa, Pa, and upper Sa. Do 10–12 minutes of alankars, slow first and then a little faster. Spend 10 minutes on raga patterns. Then sing your bandish for 10–15 minutes with taal. End with 3–5 minutes of light cooldown humming. Keep a water bottle nearby and rest your voice if you feel any strain.
