After completing the intermediate level, many learners reach a point where singing the notes correctly is no longer enough - they want to explore their own musical ideas, shape phrases, take alaap, attempt taans, and experience the joy of true improvisation. This advanced Hindustani vocal course is designed for that transition.
Here, you will train in advanced ragas, intricate bandishes, and complex taals while developing the skills that define a classical vocalist: alaap, bol alap, bol taan, sargam taan, layakari, and refined gayaki. You will also work with khayal, tarana, thumri, and semi-classical forms, giving you a broader performance vocabulary.
The focus of this course is not just accuracy, but maturation learning how to present music on stage, express rasa, and begin shaping your own style. For serious learners, this level becomes the doorway to performance opportunities, competitions, higher studies, and eventually, a personal artistic identity within Hindustani music.

The highlights of this course include -
Preparing for Advanced Training
Before diving into advanced material, the teacher first understands where you currently stand. This includes how steady your swaras are, whether you can maintain taals smoothly, and how comfortable you are with intermediate ragas and improvisation. This short phase helps the teacher adjust the speed and style of teaching so you can move toward mastery without feeling lost or rushed.
Deepening Raga Understanding
Advanced training begins with exploring ragas more deeply. Here, the focus is not only on aroha-avaroha and chalan, but on how a raga breathes and expresses emotion. You learn characteristic phrases, how to open and close alaap, and how to move through the raga with confidence. Listening to masters also becomes a key part of this phase, because advanced learning happens as much through the ear as through practice.
Learning Advanced Bandishes
Once the raga is understood, the teacher introduces bandishes that suit the raga’s personality. These bandishes are more intricate than beginner or intermediate ones, with richer movements and more space for improvisation. You learn how to sing them with proper enunciation, laya, and bhava, so the bandish becomes the foundation for your improvisation later.
Improvisation Training
This is the heart of advanced Hindustani music. Step by step, the teacher guides you through different kinds of improvisation such as alaap, bol-alaap, bol-taan, sargam-taan and layakari. You learn how to build phrases gradually, how to stay within laya without tension, and how to express your ideas musically. With time, improvisation starts feeling less like “technique” and more like personal expression.
Exploring Multiple Forms
To expand your musical vocabulary, the teacher introduces different forms such as khayal, tarana, thumri and semi-classical pieces. Each form teaches a different skill - khayal teaches depth, tarana teaches speed and clarity in taans, while thumri teaches expression and lyrical sensitivity. Learning across forms prepares you for stage singing and also helps refine your personal gayaki.
Voice Culture & Gayaki Development
A major goal of this level is strengthening your gayaki, or your personal singing style. The teacher works with you on tone, breath support, resonance, meend, gamak, and how to shape phrases beautifully. You also learn how to maintain your voice through proper riyaaz, so it remains flexible for taans and expressive work.
Learning Styles Beyond Khayal
Students won’t be limited to khayal. The curriculum also includes tarana, thumri, and semi-classical forms to expand repertoire, expression, and musical versatility.
Preparation for Stage & Higher Studies
The course equips learners for professional stage performance as well as advanced academic paths (UG, MA, PhD). It also deepens understanding of aesthetics, rasa, and bhava in Hindustani Classical Music.
