This course introduces the tradition of Indian devotional music. Students will learn bhajans, kirtans, stotras, and Sufi songs from the Bhakti tradition, which aim to connect music with devotion. The practice of singing mantras and melodies helps in building focus and peace.
The course also includes training in classical ragas and rhythm. Students will practice voice control, breathing, expression, and learn how to improvise within devotional music. Learners can choose songs from a given list to make the learning more personal.

The course begins with an introduction to Indian devotional music, exploring its connection to the Bhakti tradition and forms like bhajans, kirtans, stotras, and Sufi songs. Learners then select songs from a curated list, studying their meaning, language, and context for deeper understanding.
Musical foundations are built through an introduction to ragas and taals commonly used in devotional music. Vocal training covers breath control, voice clarity, projection, and emotional expression through melody.
The course also focuses on devotional expression (bhava), teaching students how to convey emotion and create a meditative atmosphere. Improvisation is encouraged through raga variations, rhythmic patterns, and call-and-response kirtans.
In the final stage, learners prepare for practice and performance—whether personal, in satsangs, or on stage—while gaining confidence and overcoming performance anxiety.
Any devotional song of the student’s choice can be taught. For reference, a suggested list of songs is given below:
About the Teacher
Dr Rashmi Joshi is a Hindustani classical singer with an impressive experience of 20 years teaching through different Schools/ Music Academies. She has been a Senior Professor at Shankar Mahadevan Academy, Crosthwait Girls College etc.
Dr Joshi has learnt singing in Guru Shishya Parampara, from the late Vidushi Kamala Bose for 10 years and is now improving her skills under the able guidance of internationally renowned classical singer Vidushi Smt Arti Anklikar Tikekar.
Dr Joshi has been awarded the Title of "SURMANI" from Sur Singar Samsad, Mumbai. She has won many prestigious State and National level Music Competitions. She has performed in various prestigious concerts in different cities in India and abroad.
At present she is based in Goa, performing on stages and teaching to pass down her knowledge to the next generation.
