Learn cello with Don Larson
Whether the student's goal is to play within a professional orchestra or simply to start learning how to play the cello from the beginner's level, the basic principles Don teaches will make learning faster and easier. He will work with the student, starting with the basics of bow grip, bow stroke, posture, bow control, left-hand techniques, musical phrasing, ear training, and music theory. This course can be taken by students of any level from beginner to professional.

Course Details
Over the course of 12 weeks, Don Larson will coach students in the fundamentals of the cello in 60 minutes, one to one sessions. He will use the following techniques to help students learn and progress:
- Creating a good posture that will allow students to move along with the cello
- Showing students how to properly hold and use the bow as there are various ways to do this, depending on what is being played
- How to effectively pull the bow using weight
- Correctly and effectively changing the direction of the bow using the fingers
- Why it is important to use different bow speeds for different reasons
- How to achieve the best possible tone from the cello
- How to implement the left-hand technique correctly
Students must own or have access to a cello and a bow. Don will teach students of any level between beginner and professional and from eight years old onwards.
About the Teacher: Don Larson attended Juilliard, studying with Leonard Rose and Harvey Shapiro while also performing as a cellist in the New Jersey Symphony. After graduating in 1972, he continued playing with them symphony while studying privately with Harvey Shapiro. He has also lived in Europe where he was the principal cellist in a Swiss Orchestra for 3 years. As well as teaching, Don performs recitals with composer and pianist Peter V. Stevens, Lisa Maria d'Aquila, Akiko Kinney, and cellist Eric Wilson. He has performed in London, New York, Belgium, Germany, Vancouver, and Seattle.
Students enrolling for this course on ipassio can be sure that they receive individual attention from the teacher, as the class strength is limited to 1 or 2 students. It also gives teachers the opportunity, to gauge their students progress in depth and make changes whenever and wherever required, to ensure the student gets the maximum out of this course. Since this course is detailed, students get the advantage of learning intricate details about this art form. The limited strength of the class also ensures that there is a strong bond between the students and their teacher clearing out any inhibitions that the student might have. The sustained guidance available from the teacher ensures that the student does not deviate from set goals or targets. Learning from a revered, experienced exponent of this art form, through the long duration of this course, keeps the student inspired and motivated to achieve more.
Don will email students the music they must learn and practice so books and music will not need to be sourced before classes. Purchasing a metronome is suggested, however, it is not completely necessary to the course.
