Q: How much time should a student devote to self-practice on a daily basis?

This course will require practice time outside of lessons. Time spent practicing may vary from 15 minutes per day to an hour, depending on a student’s level of interest. Students who wish to become professional singers will need more hours of practice per day using a different set of exercises and materials than students who are seeking to learn singing as a hobby. A detailed structure for home practice for each student will be discussed and explained during class.

Q: What if a student is unable to attend an upcoming class?

The student is required to inform the teacher about his absence from a particular session, two days prior to the class. In such a case, the teacher will reschedule the class and conduct the rescheduled class on or before the end (i.e. Saturday) of the ensuing week or such other time as may be mutually decided between the teacher and the student. In case the student misses to give two days prior notice about his absence to the teacher, then the decision to conduct another class for that student is completely based on the teacher’s discretion.

Q: How long will a teacher take to revert to students’ queries after class hours?

Students should get a response within 24 hours if the teacher is not preoccupied or traveling.

Q: What if the teacher wishes to reschedule a class?

Now the drill -

This course will start with learning the basics of singing that include -
Paltas - Paltas are note patterns sung in different scales—like vocal workouts. They build strength, control, and flexibility needed for Bengali song styles.
Alankars for Expression - Alankars are musical ornaments that make singing expressive. In Bengali music, they help bring out emotion and beauty, especially in genres like Rabindra Sangeet and Nazrul Geeti.
Applying to Songs - Once students master paltas and alankars, they begin using them in Bengali songs. This connects practice to performance and improves the overall quality of singing.
Age-Appropriate Song Selection - Songs are chosen based on the student’s age and skill. Younger students learn simple, melodic songs that suit their voice and understanding.
Learning Favorite Songs - Students can choose Bengali songs they love—this keeps them motivated and emotionally connected to their practice.
Stage & Competition Prep - Training includes mic handling, stage presence, and emotional expression. Mock sessions and feedback help students prepare for performances and contests.
Progress in 3 Months - With regular practice, students show clear improvement in voice control, range, and confidence within three months.

About the Teacher

Arup Sarkar, a dedicated and versatile music educator with over a decade of experience in vocal music. He began his training in semi-classical music under Sri Jayanta Sarkar and Sri Parthasarathi Deshikan, and is currently pursuing Hindustani classical music under Sri Soumyajit Das. He is also trained in synthesizer and basic Western music under Smt Sarmistha Burman, and continues to study Rabindra Sangeet under Smt Apala Basu Sen. Arup received advanced training in modern and Bollywood music from Smt Kavita Krishnamurthy and Sri Hari Haran.

Arup has been a top contestant in major reality shows like Zee Sa Re Ga Ma Pa and Great Music Gurukul, and has performed with Jeet Ganguly, Vinod Rathod, and others on prominent platforms including Colors Bangla, Doordarshan, and Akashvani. He has also worked on albums with Soumyajit and Sourendra, and performed with bands such as Leher and Blendz.

A recipient of the National Scholarship from the Ministry of Culture, Arup has taught students of all ages, trained contestants for television, and served as a senior music teacher. He holds an MA in Vocal Music from Rabindra Bharati University and brings both expertise and passion to his teaching.
