Q: What if the student is unable to attend an upcoming class?

The student is required to inform the teacher about their absence from a particular session, two days prior to the class. In such a case, the teacher will reschedule the class and conduct the rescheduled class on or before the end (i.e. Saturday) of the ensuing week or such other time as may be mutually decided between the teacher and the student. In case the student misses to give two days prior notice about their absence to the teacher, then the decision to conduct another class for that student is completely based on the teacher’s discretion.

Q: What if the teacher wishes to reschedule a class?

About the Course

Students will explore theoretical aspects of Bharatanatyam from Abhinay Darpanam and Natyashastra. As well as learn the practicalities and technicalities of this traditional dance form.

The first part of the course will cover:

Basic warm-up exercises, including sitting and standing exercises from Ashtang Yog
Advanced-level exercises that would help in holding different Bharatanatyam postures
Introduction to different Hastamudras and Paadbhedas
Recitation of Shlokas from Abhinay Darpanam and Natyashastra like Shirobheda, Drushtibheda, Grivabhed etc.

The second part of the course will cover:

Beginner-level Adavus like Tattadau, Nattadau etc
Techniques to perform these Adavus in 3 speeds i.e. slow, medium, and fast
Some complicated Adavus like Tirmanam Adavu

The third part of the course will cover:

Introduction to the basics of the Taal system of Carnatic music to understand traditional Bharatanatyam compositions
Learn to count and perform Aditaal on hands
Introduction to the concept of Jaathis like Tishra and Chatushra Jaathi
Techniques to perform Jaathis with Footwork

The course will conclude with learning a small choreography based on the portion you have learned. Usually in your mother tongue for a better understanding of the choreography and its meaning.

About the Teacher: Muktai Bhagwat has trained under the guidance of Maniktai Ambike from Nrityangan Academy, Pune. She is learning Karana under the guidance of Vithya Arasu, a disciple of Dr Padma Subramanyam. She has participated in many dance competitions and events. She has also choreographed and performed at professional shows.

Muktai started the Nrityanand Dance Academy, in Pune in the year 2012. Since then many students successfully learned, appeared and cleared different Bharatanatyam examinations. Currently, students from India, the USA, the UK, Luxembourg, Germany, and Thailand are learning Bharatanatyam at different levels.

Muktai believes that there is no shortcut to success and not at all in the field of dance! A strong foundation leads to the ladder of success which can be climbed only through practice.
