This course takes you to the next stage in Bharatanatyam by strengthening what you already know and adding new movements, expressions, and dance pieces. Here’s what you’ll learn step by step:
Quick refresher of Adavus (basic steps and footwork)
Adavus are the building blocks of Bharatanatyam. In this part, we’ll quickly revise the basic steps you learned earlier. This helps make sure your posture, rhythm, and footwork are strong before moving ahead.
Learning Alaripu (the first dance piece in Bharatanatyam)
Alaripu is usually the first dance performed on stage. It is both a warm-up and a prayer to start the dance performance. You’ll learn the full piece with body movements, rhythm, and coordination.
Introduction to Abhinaya (expressions in dance)
Abhinaya means expressing emotions with your face, eyes, and body. You will practice how to show happiness, sadness, anger, love, and devotion while dancing. This will help you tell stories through dance instead of just doing movements.
Bhru Bheda (eyebrow movements) and Greeva Bheda (neck movements)
Bhru Bheda: Different ways of moving your eyebrows to express feelings. Greeva Bheda: Different graceful neck movements that make your dance look elegant. These are small but very important details that bring life to your performance.
Asamyutha Hastas (single-hand gestures) – till Chandrakala Hasta
In Bharatanatyam, hands are used to make special gestures called mudras. Asamyutha Hastas are gestures done with one hand. You will learn all the single-hand gestures up to Chandrakala Hasta, and how to use them in dance to show objects, feelings, or actions.
Samyutha Hastas (double-hand gestures) – till Samputa Hasta
Samyutha Hastas are gestures made with both hands together. These mudras are used to tell more complex stories, like showing a tree, bird, or an action. You will learn all the double-hand gestures up to Samputa Hasta, along with their meanings and uses.
Every student learns differently, so this course is shaped around your skills and goals. If you’re confident, you’ll move quickly into Abhinaya and Alaripu; if you need revision, you’ll get extra support. You’ll learn at a pace that suits you, with personal feedback after every class and a practice plan made just for you. Whether your goal is performance, exams, or fitness, the course adapts to your journey.
