In-depth Bharatanatyam for Beginners- Level I

Q: Do the students need the attire and accessories needed for Bharatnatyam to start on the basic course?

They do not need it at the beginning. Dressing up for the dance form will be taught at a later stage.

Q: What if the student is unable to attend an upcoming class?

The student must inform the teacher about his absence from a particular session two days before the class. In such a case, the teacher will reschedule the class and conduct the rescheduled class on or before the end (i.e. Saturday) of the ensuing week or such other time as may be mutually decided between the teacher and the student. If the student misses giving two days prior notice about his absence to the teacher, then the decision to conduct another class for that student is wholly based on the teacher’s discretion.

About the Course

These classes introduce the enrolled students to Bharatanatyam, its meaning, and the precise movements involved in its expression. It will cover the following:

An understanding of the dance form and its three essential elements: Nritta, Nritya, and ve Natya
Terminologies and concepts of Bharatnatyam
Meaning and application of different movements, from samyukta hastas (two-hand gestures) and pada bheda (foot positions) to Drishti bheda (eye movements) and more
Recital of the Jatis, or the rhythm patterns associated with Bharatnatyam
Related physical exercises and poses
Different sets of steps in Bharatanatyam, from the basic Thattadavu to the more advanced Sarikkal Adavu

Upon completing this course, students can recite Sollu kattus of all adavus in tala and perform a solo recital.

About the Teacher: From a young age, Veena Chikkanahalli Seshadri was intensely interested in dance, art, and drama. Throughout an impressive experience of more than 25 years, she has performed and taught Bharatanatyam all over the world.

She trained professionally at the Kalakshetra College of Fine Arts with Guru Minal Prabhu and Guru Jayalakshmi Eshwar. Now a guru in her own right, she's a renowned dancer and choreographer who has received numerous distinguished awards and achievements. These include a grade A from Doordarshan, an Empanelled artist of ICCR, the Natya Mayuri title from Sadhana International Art and Yoga Festival in Beijing, and honor by Sur Noopur, New Delhi, in recognition of excellence in teaching.

Veena C.S. is recognized as the embodiment of Bharatanatyam, and she brings expertise and passion to each performance and lesson.
