About the Course

Many people ~ both school-age students and adults alike ~ want to sing, but have been discouraged by teachers, family, and friends.  Our culture has such a strong preference that only people who are the most skilled should sing, dance, or paint, and this course is designed from a very different perspective.  Everyone can sing, and in this course, students will explore their own personal strengths, interests, and voice in an environment that is fun, creative, and above all, encouraging.

During this course, students will:

  • Explore their own voice with curiosity, including tone quality, range, dynamics, and expression
  • Engage in exercises designed to connect the voice and body awareness
  • Explore important elements of technique, posture, and breath control
  • Experiment with singing in a variety of styles and genres, and also focus on particular songs and styles of interest to the student
  • Learn a balance between wanting to grow and improve as a singer, and the challenges that arise through too much self-criticism and judgment
  • Explore opportunities to sing in daily life ~ from karaoke to kirtan, from joining a band to joining a choir, to singing with friends, family, and community, and even considering dreams of recording an album.  Lessons meet students where they are and ask them to consider their goals and dreams
  • For students who have a strong desire to sing, but who also have big creative and mental blocks, lessons offer a space for processing self-limiting stories, while also bringing in exercises and processes that help them to transform those blocks into opportunities.
  • Students are not required to read music at first, and Angela will evaluate whether that may be an appropriate direction as lessons continue.

About Angela Blueskies: Angela Blueskies, a graduate of Peabody Conservatory, has been teaching and performing for over thirty years, and is a creative and passionate educator. Her multi-genre career has found her in a variety of performance settings, from symphony orchestras and chamber music to off-Broadway productions, to world music and improvisation, to touring healing arts centers across North and South America offering music and sound meditation events and workshops. For many years, Angela was an artist-in-residence for both the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and Choral Arts Society of Washington, bringing music integrated programs into K – 12 classrooms. She has just released her third album, Ayni, a collection of original songs inspired by her path of music and meditation. Angela lives in the greater Washington DC area, and now teaches flute, Native American flute, and voice exclusively online.

Angela Blueskies is also seen as a medicine woman, facilitator and visionary musician who has a deepened understanding of the healing power of both music and the Earth. Angela has been playing the flute since the age of nine and was mostly self-taught until she attended high school. Angela has immersed herself in global music styles, such as African trance drumming, the music of the Himalayas, Native American flute music, traditional Celtic folk music, and ceremonial songs. Angela has performed in churches, concert halls, yoga studios, schools, temples, and in sacred ceremonies across the world. She has also released two albums: Songs of Spirit and Sound Medicine Meditations.
