Contemporary dance blends elements of multiple dance styles and lets dancers express emotionality through movements and breath. 

Here is an opportunity to learn about the importance of contemporary dance as an art form through a brief exploration of its history, influences, and techniques.

This course curated by Yukti Bhatnagar introduces the students to the Contemporary dance form, its meaning, and the techniques involved in the style. It begins by learning the meaning of its three basic elements: Body posture, movement, and technique.

The methods used involve an accumulation of knowledge and experience gathered by Yukti from the fields of Dance, Dance Improvisation, Contact Improvisation, Yoga, Movement & Art Therapy.

  • What is Contemporary dance?
  • From where did it originate?
  • A brief introduction to how we place our body when we dance followed by an introduction to body placement and stance and familiarizing students with extensions of the body. 
  • Introduction to Flow in Contemporary -
  • The class focuses on combinations of flow in Contemporary dance.
  • Flow (free, bound, or continuous): one of the four main factors that make up the dynamics of movement
  • Learning a combination of steps with Contemporary dance style including flow, and pointed feet to be used in choreography.
  • Connection of rhythm with dance steps -
  • The class will focus on music.
  • It will ensure that the students understand the music whilst learning the choreography.
  • Understanding the beat is the most important aspect of the class and dancing the steps taught in the class on an entire song whilst understanding the music.
  • Recapitulation of understanding the rhythm -
  • The class will focus on recapitulation of the entire sequence, using technical terms of Contemporary dance, and revising the entire choreography.
  • Introduction to different types of levels in Contemporary dance -
  • The class will focus on inculcating levels in Contemporary choreography.
  • Levels in dance refer to where the body moves in space relative to the ground.
  • Low levels are usually thought of as the ground. Medium is when the dancer is standing. High levels refer to the space as far away from the ground.
  • Inculcating different forms of levels inclusive of space in Contemporary dance followed by the main choreography.
  • Understanding body movements with music -
  • The class will focus on a combination of steps that makes the student understand the difference between extension and flexion followed by the main choreography.
  • Coordination of bodily movements -
  • The class talks about hand and leg coordination which is a part of the choreography that will include a basic understanding of Contemporary dance style.
  • Revision of steps understanding the flow -
  • The class focuses on the student’s performance of all the choreographies the student has learned in the Contemporary dance style followed by revising the entire choreography whilst focusing on musicality.
  • Improvisation -
  • This class teaches about improvisation which involves free and spontaneous body movement while dancing instead of following a memorized pre-designed sequence of dance steps.
  • Influential artists of Contemporary followed by videos - Familiarising students with Contemporary vocabulary
  • Thematic representation - Learning a combination of steps including release and contraction to be used in choreography
  • Connection of rhythm with dance steps - Dancing the similar steps on an entire song whilst understanding the music 
  • Revision of steps understanding the rhythm - Inculcating appropriate terms used in Contemporary dance and revising the entire choreography
  • Acquiring smooth transitions - Inculcating transitions in Contemporary dance followed by the main choreography
  • Movement Phrasing and formation of sequence - Understanding body awareness and usage of breathwork whilst learning the choreography
  • Weight shift and performance skills - Understanding the weight shift of body and dance out the choreography which will include performance skills focusing on the expression of dance
  • Revision of steps understanding the rhythm - Revising the entire choreography whilst focussing on musicality

Each class will be divided into 3 parts: Warm up & Stretches, Basic technique, and Choreography.

The song for each choreography will be decided before each class. The duration of the song will be 1.5 - 2 minutes.

 

About the Teacher

Yukti Bhatnagar is a Dance Instructor, Yoga and Wellness Coach. She has more than 10 years of experience in different dance styles like Jazz, Contemporary, Hip Hop, Jazz Funk, Bollywood, Whacking under reputed dance companies/instructors in New Delhi, Mumbai, and Canada. She has also pursued Dance Movement Therapy from Kinections, New York.

Yukti has worked on different projects as a choreographer in Contemporary Arts Week, Grand Finale of Rum Jhum dance reality show at Ficci Auditorium (Delhi), World Dance Day at Sri Ram Centre, and for Bengali festivals in Kolkata to choreograph Indian contemporary pieces.

Yukti has worked as a Senior dance instructor for several schools and institutions. She has judged TV show Nach Dil Se and several other online events such as Rise Eve Dance Centre, India.

For Yukti dance has always been about experimenting with different dance styles and maintaining versatility as an artist. She has collaborated with ipassio to share all her knowledge with dance enthusiasts in India and abroad.
