“Nritya Vikas” is designed for students who have completed their beginner-level training and are ready to move toward more intricate rhythm, storytelling, and performance techniques. This course bridges foundational knowledge and advanced stage-readiness.
Kathak, originally a narrative dance form, evolved into a complex classical performance art blending footwork, rhythm, facial expressions, and musicality. This course introduces students to deeper Layakari, new Taal structures, and creative Abhinaya compositions.
Teentaal Variations (16 beats) – Teentaal is the foundational taal and the most versatile when it comes to weaving different dance and musical compositions. In this course, students learn to explore intricate patterns, syncopations, and rhythmic dialogues within this foundational taal.
Introduction to New Taals –
Jhaptaal (10 beats) – Understanding its split (2-3-2-3) and creating balanced compositions.
Rupak (7 beats) – Mastering the unusual cycle and adapting movements to fit its phrasing.
Complex Layakari – Practice tempo variations (dugun – double speed, tigun – triple speed, chaugun – quadruple speed) to build rhythmic agility.
Recitation with Speed Control – Refine padhant skills, maintaining clarity and accuracy while varying tempo.
Paran – Master intermediate-level percussion-rich compositions, blending bols with dynamic movement.
Chakradar – Learn three-part rhythmic cycles culminating in a striking finish.
Amad – Discover aesthetically beautiful introductory pieces used to open performances.
Tukra & Toda Combinations – Execute longer, complex sequences that demand precision and stamina.
Tihai Variations & Cross-Rhythms – Craft rhythmic phrases that resolve elegantly across the taal cycle.
Multiple Chakkars (up to 7 or more) – Perfect smooth, balanced spins with control and poise.
Creative Use of Space – Move beyond the straight line, incorporating diagonals, circles, and layered floor patterns.
Gat Nikas – Depict narrative moments such as Krishna playing the flute or Radha’s graceful walk.
Thumri Interpretation – Express romantic and devotional nuances with subtle gestures and emotive depth.
Bhajan/Padam – Develop Rasa (emotional essence) to bring devotional poetry alive on stage.
Gharana Comparison – Study the stylistic distinctions between Lucknow (emphasis on grace and expression) and Jaipur (focus on rhythm and footwork).
Natya Shastra & Abhinaya Darpan Basics – Learn foundational classical dance theory and hand gesture (mudra) classifications.
Margam Structure – Understand the sequence and elements that form a complete Kathak recital.
Choreography & Improvisation – Develop original pieces and adapt known ones with creative flair.
Solo & Group Stage Pieces – Prepare polished items for presentation, ensuring synchrony in group work.
Stage Presence & Costume Knowledge – Learn posture, poise, and costume aesthetics that enhance performance impact.
