This course aims to introduce the students to the basic concepts of Kathak. Just like alphabets are to language and notes are to music, the following concepts are the foundational blocks for Kathak. Here are the highlights of the course -
Tatkaar - ‘Ta Thei Thei Tat, Aa Thei Thei Tat’ - the basic footwork. First, the focus will be on the footwork and then slowly the hand movements will be introduced. Different variations of the footwork will also be introduced.
Thaat - Simple thaat (graceful standing postures) will be taught. It serves as an introductory part of the performance where the dancer showcases grace, poise, balance, and control. The chest is lifted, shoulders relaxed and the head held high. The dancer slowly transits into the performance from this position.
Tukda - Tukda is a group of specific bols or syllables weaved into a rhythmic composition. The dancers demonstrate their technical prowess such as footwork, spins, and body movements. Simple tukdas of different varieties will be taught.
Hori - A small composition on Holi will be taught. It is an abhinaya piece that will give an introduction to the art of emoting.
Padhant - It refers to reciting of rhythmic bol by the dancer or accompanying musicians. Very simple compositions will be introduced at this stage that will give an idea about the basic structure and rolling out of the Padhant.
