About the Course

After internalizing the concept of Teentaal (16-beat time cycle) at the beginner’s level, at the intermediate level, the students will learn Jhaptaal (ten beats time cycle).

The lessons that the students have learned at the beginner level will become more elaborate at the intermediate level. For example, they will learn the Tukdas in Jhaptaal in a more elaborate way.

Some of the technical concepts that will taught in this course include -

  • Aamad, - enter into the dance with the basic bol - Ta Thai Tat.
  • Paran - Paran is a composition created using Pakhawaj as an instrument. It has a very masculine sound and bols are very vigorous bols.
  • Paranamad - When the Amad is joined with the Paran, we call it Paranamad. Or it is an Aamad that ends with the Paran.
  • Permilu - It is a composition where different kinds of sounds of nature and different instruments are used. Sounds of birds, a pakhawaj, or a ghungroo.
  • Gatnikas - Gait or chaal of a dancer.

These are all technical aspects of Kathak. Any kind of dance is divided into two parts - Nritta and Nritya. Nritta is the technical part whereas Nritya is dance with abhinaya.

In Kathak training, the students are first taught the technical part of Kathak. Taal is a very important part of Kathak. And side by side the students learn the nritya which is the art of storytelling with the abhinaya.

When it comes to Nritya, understanding 9 Rasas becomes very significant. The 9 Rasas include  - Shringara, Hasya, Karuna, Raudra, Veera, Bhayanaka, Bibhatsa, Adbutha, and Shantha.

The students learn to perform Guru Vandana and Ganesh Vandana in Jhaptaal.
