Course Summary

This course is the first step for students wishing to play classical piano. It is an introductory course, preparing students to later appear for the ABRSM examinations and get an internationally recognised certification. Students undergoing this ‘Piano and Theory of Music’ beginners course will learn to read and write traditional western music notation. By the end of this course, students will be able to read and play short tunes without assistance, and will then be able to appear for the Grade-level ABRSM Examinations in music theory or piano.

About the Course

This course is designed to create a strong foundation for students in piano and music theory. The teacher for this course is a Grade 8 level achiever, the highest level in music awarded by the Trinity Music College, London. Her grade also certifies her to impart the knowledge she has gained pursuing piano and music theory. This course will commence by teaching the western music basics and theory. It will speak to students about rhythm, which is a combination of beats played at different speeds also referred to as tempo in a musical piece. Next up, the teacher will teach students about dynamics that is basically the expression of music, which could represent excitement, joy, sorrow, articulation and such other factors in a musical piece. Further on students get introduced and briefed about melody which relates to the pitch, meaning the characteristics relating to the tone that defines high or low notes, in other words, the loudness or softness in a song or tune.

Moving ahead, in this course students get introduced to the harmony which relates to the different notes played simultaneously in patterns to create a pleasing sound. The teacher will next speak about texture in music, educating students on the different styles of music. This course that adheres to the ABRSM standard of music education will through the course of this beginner program teach students on navigating the keyboard, reading classical notes, the finger techniques required to play the piano. Students will also be taught about terminologies used to identify the different elements in a musical piece such as scales, chords and arpeggios; notes of chords played in rapid successions. They will also get trained on 5 finger patterns of playing the piano. Finally, at the culmination of this course students will be able to play, Elvis, Beethoven and the piano repertoire on the piano, besides being ready to appear for the ABRSM, Grade 1, certification test or exam.

About Frida Mistry: Frida Mistry always was inclined towards arts, visible in the fact that she completed her graduation in sculpting from the well known and recognized art Institute of Bangalore, Chitrakala Parishad of Fine Arts. She has also achieved a Grade 8 certification in piano from the Trinity School of Music in London for her piano playing skills. She has through the years endeavored to teach students different art forms that she has mastered. Frida has taught piano to students at a couple of the reputed schools in Bangalore for over a decade. Currently, Frida devotes her time to teach interested students piano, crochet and knitting from her home in the outskirts of Bangalore.
