About the Course

The highlights of this course include -

  • Knowing the instrument - The course will begin with learning about the instrument. The students will also learn about its glorious lineage. As mentioned earlier, Rudra Veena is an ancient and rare instrument deeply rooted in India's musical heritage. Known for its bass, and heavenly sound, the Rudra Veena is renowned for its ability to enhance spiritual awareness and meditation.
  • Getting the correct posture and fingering techniques  - Rudra veena is a heavy instrument and the practitioner needs to learn to hold it for long hours without straining his/ her back. Hence, the initial part of the course will be devoted to getting the correct posture. The next lesson is to learn effective techniques for creating sound using both hands.
  • Introducing the notes - Learners will be introduced to the musical notes. They will learn the movements of both hands and the Tala strings for creating the intricate and harmonious melodies that Rudra Veena is known for.
  • Tuning the instrument - Understanding the tuning of the Rudra Veena is another crucial aspect of the course. Proper tuning is vital to bring out the authentic sound of the instrument and to ensure that the music aligns with the traditional Dhrupad style.
  • Learning the Dhrupad style of music - Since Rudra Veena's presentation style is rooted in Dhrupad, initial training will focus on this ancient form of music, which is derived from the Samaveda. Dhrupad is not just a musical genre; it is a spiritual journey that encompasses Vedic traditions' profound philosophies and meditative practices.
  • As students progress, they will be gradually introduced to different Layakari (rhythmic variations), Bol (syllables), and But (specific rhythmic patterns), which are distinctive aspects of Dhrupad. This gradual and comprehensive approach ensures that learners not only master the technical aspects of the Rudra Veena but also embrace its spiritual and philosophical essence.
