About the Course

Here is a list of topics that will be covered in this course. The names of the topics are mentioned in Sanskrit.

  • अजन्त-हलन्तशब्दाः - A significant chapter in Sanskrit grammar that helps to understand the structural forms of the verbs and words. In Sanskrit, words are categorized into two main groups: अजन्त (ajanta) and हलन्त (halanta) words. अजन्त words remain unchanged at the end and are usually nouns, while हलन्त words undergo changes at the end and are typically verbs. Students learn to identify and differentiate between these two categories. This topic is taught by explaining the concepts and rigorous practice of translation and interpretation of Sanskrit text.
  • पञ्चसु लकारेषु क्रियापदानां पाठः - This topic covers five different verb forms and tenses and their usages. In this topic, you will learn the conjugation patterns for each of these tenses. This includes understanding how the root verb form changes to indicate different tenses, moods, and voices. You will practice conjugating both regular and irregular verbs in each tense. You will learn to construct sentences in each tense, applying your knowledge of verb conjugation to convey specific meanings and contexts.
  • कारकाणि - In this section, information is given about "kārakas," which are the grammatical cases or roles that different words or phrases play in a sentence. Understanding kārakas is essential in comprehending how different elements in a sentence relate to the verb and to each other.
  • सन्धिः - The word "sandhi" itself means "joining" or "combination". It defines the rules and principles governing the combination and transformation of sounds at the junction of words or phrases in Sanskrit. In this topic, you will learn about the different types of sandhi including - swara sandhi, vyanjana sandhi, visarga, and samas. It will help you to learn how the phonetic integrity of the language is maintained and also aid in the correct analysis and interpretation of sentences and verses in Sanskrit literature.
  • समासः - Understanding samasa is crucial for interpreting Sanskrit texts, as it allows readers to break down compound words and discern their individual components and meanings. It also plays a significant role in the aesthetic and literary aspects of Sanskrit, as the language uses samasa to create intricate and concise expressions. In this topic, you will learn the rules and guidelines for forming compound words, including how to combine different words, how to modify the words to fit the context, and how to determine the gender, number, and case of the compound.
  • प्रयोगाः - The word - प्रयोगाः refers to usage. Understanding प्रयोग is essential for gaining proficiency in the Sanskrit language and effectively using it in reading, writing, and interpreting Sanskrit texts and literature. It involves a deep understanding of the grammar, syntax, and semantics of the language.
  • लकारः - The chapter on "लकारः" in Sanskrit grammar primarily deals with verb conjugation, specifically focusing on the past tense. Here, you will learn how to form and use past tense verbs in Sanskrit.
  • शतृशानजन्तरूपाणि - The "शतृ" (śatṛ) and "शानच्" (śānac) forms are two of the main forms used to create causative verbs. Causative verbs add depth and nuance to the language, enabling speakers and readers to express actions that are caused or influenced by specific agents or factors.
