This course will explore various forms of Indian classical dance, techniques, rhythmic footwork, artistic hand gestures, and facial expressions. By the end of the course, students will have gained practical and theoretical knowledge of the dance form as well as be confidently able to perform various choreographies in this style.
This 30-week semi-classical dance course for beginner, intermediate and advanced level students, will be taught by the Shiamak Davar's Institute for Performing Arts. It introduces the enrolled students to semi-classical dance styles, their meaning, and the precise movements involved in its style. Students begin by learning the meaning behind these dance moves and their three basic elements: Body posture, movement, and expressions. Students also learn the meanings behind the different types of movements. The instructor for this course will be guiding the students, according to their level, through the different techniques, movement styles, and expression basics that are associated with semi-classical dance, and the meanings of various terms and concepts so that each student has a true understanding of the dance forms. She also leads the enrolled students in basic physical exercises, hook-steps, and poses before moving on to learning different sets of steps in semi-classical dance and its association with dance forms like Indian classical dance, Indian folk dance, and Western classical dance. After the successful completion of this course, students will be able to perform a whole song with dance steps on their own as they will be taught the choreography by the instructor in the last few weeks.
About the instructor: Your instructor for this course is Shivani from Shiamak Davar's Institute for Performing Arts. She has professional and teaching experience for more than 5 years now, after being trained by dance maestro Shiamak Davar himself. She is also a certified dancer from Shiamak's dance program.
