Basics of Mohiniyattam
This course is an introductory course for students interested to learn the ancient classical dance form of Kerala known as Mohiniyattam. It would teach student the basic adavus, steps or foot movements, alongside mudras or hand gestures. This course would culminate with the teacher preparing her students for a performance, rendered to a shloka. By the end of this course, students would have learnt some of the basic adavus or foot steps, alongside a selected few mudras or hand gestures.
This course is aimed towards getting interested students attuned to learning the ancient dance form from Kerala, known as Mohiniyattam. Mohiniyattam or the dance of the enchantress was first practised in temples and royal courts before it made its way into the public domain. This course will first introduce students to the ancient artform and its emergence. This will be followed by the teacher teaching students 20 basic adavus, steps or foot movements to initiate learning mohiniyattam alongside teaching students the main mudras. By the end of the course students will be taught to perform, using aduvas and mudras to a shloka rendered by the teacher.
About Dr. Rekha Raju: Identified as a child prodigy after entering dance school at the tender age of 3 and a half years, Rekha Raju has come a long way. After refining her skills as a bharatanatyam dancer Dr. Rekha Raju has devoted most of her time to mohiniattam, a dance form popular in Kerala. Perhaps her birth in Palakkad, Kerala could be the possible reason for her interest in Mohiniyattam. Raised in Bangalore, the gifted artist now runs Nithya Dhama, a dance school in Bangalore. Amidst this hustle and bustle Dr.Rekha Raju successfully completed her phd in dance from Mysore University studying Margi and desi techniques of Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattam.
This beginners course in mohiniyattam will bring about the physical flexibility and mental understanding required to follow and perform the ancient art form of Mohiniyattam, as advised by the teacher. It will not just serve as an ideal introduction to the dance form but will also be a propeller for you to pursue learning Mohiniyattam in the advanced stages.
