The curriculum of the course covers different sets of exercises and compositions in the following order:
Sarali Varisai- exercises to learn the Swarams in the octave in ascending and descending patterns and at different speeds (Kalams)
Janta Varisai- exercises to learn the Swarams in the octave, in a twin fashion
Dhāttu Varisai- exercises to learn Swarams in a zig-zag manner for control over notes and their combinations
Melthayi Varisai- exercises to learn to sing in the higher octaves
Introduction to Geethams or short compositions with lyrics and Swara patterns
Introduction to Varnams or the complicated compositions
About the Teacher: Expert N S Kamakshi has over 20 years of experience teaching and performing Carnatic music. She has taken training under the renowned vocalist Smt Suguna Varadachari. A well-known vocalist in India, she also plays the violin and has an M.A. in Indian music from the University of Madras.
Kamakshi has a visual impairment, and she strongly believes in the healing powers of music of any kind and hopes to share her love of Carnatic music with her students. She also received a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture for Advanced Violin training in January 2002.
