About the Course
The highlights of the course include -
- Sarale Varisai, Janti Varisai, and Dhaatu Varisai - "Varisai" refers to a set of exercises in Carnatic music that help in the development of voice culture, control, and agility. These exercises typically involve the practice of swara patterns in different combinations, aiding in the mastery of the fundamental elements of Carnatic music.
- Taara Sthaayi, Mandara Sthaayi - There are three octaves in which music is performed - Mandra (lower), Madhya (middle), and Taara (high). A significant objective behind voice training is to expand the vocal range so that the singer can transit smoothly between all three octaves. It allows for a complete exploration of the musical scale and enables the rendition of compositions in their entirety.
- Sapthaswaras and its nomenclature - Sapthaswaras refer to the basic seven notes on which the very foundation of music lies. It is important for vocalists to understand the position and vibration of each of these notes.
- Alankaarams in Suladi Saptha Thalas - The Thalas (rhythms) will be introduced and their application in music will be practiced through the Alamkaarams.
- Apart from the basic concepts of Carnatic music, the students will also learn -
- A devotional song on Lord Ganesha or Shiva
- Patriotic song based on Carnatic Raaga
- Devaranaama composed by Sri Purandara Dasa
- Life history of Sri Purandara Dasaru
About the Teacher
Sowmya DR is specialized in Carnatic, Folk, and Light music. She has received training in Carnatic music from eminent vocalists and mentors such as Vidushi Vijaya Subramanyam, VidushiShashikala, and Dr. Meera Rajaram Pranesh. Sowmya has done an advanced-level course under the tutelage of Vidushi Dhanyashri Kanchana. She studied Chamundeshwari Asthottara Shathakrithis under the able guidance of Dr. Meera Rajaram Pranesh.
Sowmya completed her Graduation in Music from Acharya Pathashala College of Arts, Bangalore, and her Post Graduation She completed her Post Graduation in Carnatic Music from Jain University, Bangalore. She was awarded with Gold Medal for holding first rank in Graduation.
She did not confine her learning to just singing. Rather, she even mastered skills when music can be used for therapeutic purposes for the development of special children and treating depression. She did these courses on Music Therapy from the Information Research Center, Shankarmutt.
In her career span, she has performed at several prestigious stages and taught Carnatic music to students through workshops, online and offline classes.
