Harmonium is usually used as an accompaniment during performances of Ghazals, Thumri, and other Indian classical music. Harmonium has 7 basic notes with 5 interspersed half-notes, resulting in a 12 note scale. Understanding the basics of notations will help students in the long run when they wish to play compositions. Harmonium is very similar to a synthesizer keyboard. Beginner courses will start with foundations of harmonium music including tonic position for ragas, basic finger movement techniques, etc. Moving on with lessons on Raga and taal, basic rhythm and tempo, Taal padhan, Sargam telling traditions. Students will then be revised on concepts like swaras and talas, before moving onto an in-depth overview of the raga melodic system. Basic harmonium playing lessons including scales, octaves, reeds, and tuning will be covered as well. Students will be trained on playing harmonium solo, with or without singing, as well as Semi Classical, Ghazal, Qawwali and Bhajan. Students will also learn several compositions and bandishes in the due process.
Chords are three or more notes played at the same time. Playing chords on harmonium is slightly challenging as the left hand is used for pumping bellows to force air into harmonium and using the same hand for playing chords could be overwhelming. There are two types of chords: major chords and minor chords. Chords produce harmony. In order to play a song in harmonium, our teachers will guide you to break down a song into several small phrases and play the major and minor chords with each small segment of the song’s line. Soon enough, students will be able to fill melodies with harmonies of chords.
