Course Details
This course will cover the essential fundamentals of Hindustani classical flute music. Lessons begin with the basics of handling and blowing into the instrument, with various fingering and airstream techniques. Next are more complex lessons, when instructor Panchajanya Dey will guide students through an introduction to Hindustani classical ragas and talas while students learn to develop an ear for their rich rhythmic patterns. Finally, instructor Dey will impart upon the students the basic structure of classical recitation upon which they may move on to learning at an intermediate level.
About Panchajanya Dey: Expert flutist Panchajanya Dey began pursuing his musical interests at a young age, studying classical musical fundamentals under Sri Sakti Pada Nag. Panchajanya also learned the 'Gayaki Ang' tradition under the school of Vishnupur Gharana. Dey received his advanced training under Pt. Sanjoy Bandopadhyay and his classical music studies were completed with Smt. Rakhi Bandopadhyay, while Sri Chittapriya Chowdhury provided him with the training of tabla under the school of Benaras. Panchajanya Dey received his education at Rabindra Bharati University and has ten years of performance experience. Panchajanya Dey understands the importance of learning the foundations of Hindustani classical music in its entirety before moving on to popular songs like Bollywood music. This approach ensures the student has the ability to create their own unique sound, as opposed to the limiting practice of mimicking popular melodies.
Students enrolling for this long-term course on ipassio can be sure that they receive individual attention from the teacher, as the class strength is limited to 3 students. It also gives teachers the opportunity, to gauge their students progress in depth and make changes whenever and wherever required, to ensure the student gets the maximum out of this course. Since long-term courses are detailed, students get the advantage of learning intricate details about this art form. The limited strength of the class also ensures that there is a strong bond between the students and their teacher clearing out any inhibitions that the student might have. The sustained guidance available from the teacher ensures that the student does not deviate from set goals or targets. Learning from a revered, experienced exponent of this art form, through the long duration of this course, keeps the student inspired and motivated to achieve more.
As a course for beginners, there are no required prerequisites and it is designed to meet students at the most basic level and prepare them for the next course in instructor Dey’s educational series, Intermediate Hindustani Flute. Students will need a tanpura and tabla program (iShala for Android and iTablaPro for iOS is suggested.) A notebook will be necessary to take notes during courses, and each student will need their own flute (C scale medium flute suggested.) Upon successful completion of this course, students will be prepared to play basic melodies and enroll in the next flute course taught by instructor Dey.
