About Online Flute Classes

How to learn flute for beginners?

Indian flute can be learned either in Hindustani or Carnatic style, to begin with. There are several free notes and PDFs that are available on the web, but always the best way is to learn the basics directly from a teacher. At ipassio, we offer private flute lessons to our students who take them online through video conferencing. To support strong foundational learning for beginners, our teachers hand out several PDFs of notes and worksheets that students can use to learn at home. However, this decision depends on the teacher who assesses the skills through the lessons. The flute classes may happen once a week or twice depending on the course you’re enrolling for.

Topics to be covered

In the flute lessons, students will be introduced to the right way of holding and blowing the flute. Then, you’ll be taught twelve flute notes comprising of major and minor notes, such as sa, re, ga, ma, pa, dha, ni. These seven notes will be practiced on different scales and patterns, before getting introduced to taal or rhythmic cycles. Moving on, students will learn shuddh and komal notes in different patterns, practicing ascending and descending notes. After learning about talas and sargams, ragas such as bhoopali, yaman and durga will be covered. This and plenty more will lay a strong basic foundation in Hindustani and Carnatic flute lessons.

History of Flute instrument

Hindustani flute or bansuri was originated in India and it can be traced back to being an important instrument in Natya Shastra. The first varieties were found carved into the bone of a cave bear. Carnatic flute, also known as venu, is considered to be one of the three original instruments for making music, along with veena and human voice. Western concert flute came into existence in 1810 when German flautist Theobald Boehm developed the instrument. This western flute became widely used in Europe, especially England. In 1822, a father-son duo named Nicholson's adjusted placement of keys, created wider holes and made the body thinner. This became another popular version of the western flute.
