Introduction to Hindustani Classical Vocal Music
This six-week course creates a strong foundation for students looking to step into the world of Hindustani classical music. Students will become well versed in the meaning and application of the three fundamentals of music: melody, rhythm, and lyrics. In addition, students will learn exercises focused on building voice texture and development. Perfect for students with an interest in listening, understanding, and appreciating Hindustani classical music, this course will provide the basics needed to explore this musical style.

Course Details
Hindustani Vocal Music for Beginners is a journey in Indian classical and semi-classical music with an accomplished, professional vocalist, Atri Kotal. Starting with the basics, students will be introduced to musical notation and vocal exercises. Once these have been covered, students will be introduced to raga music and the concepts of tala and laya, or speed and rhythm. By the end of the course, students will have the ability to sing and present any one raga in chhota khayal form. Additionally, students will be instructed in beginners swara mapping and identification, the process of identifying notes in simple Hindi songs. These lessons will provide students with an established understanding of Hindustani vocal music.
Students of this course will flourish under the instruction of an expert in Hindustani classical music and will receive an excellent introductory education. After the course has ended, students will be able to expand on the concepts and topics they’ve learned, including the appreciation of music and vocal ability. As for course materials, necessary documents and recordings will be provided, as well as additional materials for developing students’ overall interest in learning and listening to classical music.

About Atri Kotal: Based in Kolkata, Atri Kotal is longtime student of classical music and an accomplished performing artist. She began her formal training in Hindustani classical music at the age of 11, under the tutelage of the late Pandit Biresh Roy, and later under Smt Haimanti Shukla and Ustad Jainul Abedin of Agra Gharana. In 2014, Kotal released her first album of devotional music titled Naman – Light of the Soul, a collection of bhajans. She performs live in various venues in West Bengal and teaches vocal music to students all over the world. The recipient of numerous awards, most recently Kotal received the National Scholarship in both Hindustani vocal and semi-classical music from the Ministry of Culture in 2015.
Long term courses deal with creating a strong foundation on a specific topic. The syllabus of a Long term course is predefined and ready before the commencement of the course. This gives students an understanding of the knowledge they will gain in the stipulated period of time, helping them in their planning and decision making. The persistent support from teachers enables the student to accomplish and achieve the desired result or outcome within the given time frame. The class strength for Long term courses is limited to 3, ensuring that each student gets attention. A set of 3 individuals enrolling for a short term course encourages learning from peers and social interaction. This long term course bodes good for students passionate about learning, setting them up for the long-term or advanced level of learning.
Age should be above 5 years and a basic interest in listening to and learning music should be there.
