Course Details
During this course, students will get a thorough introduction to the basics of Indian music and rhythm, including the history of Carnatic music. This course will continue to introduce the mridangam instrument with an overview of how the instrument is designed and constructed. Balaji will also teach his students about the works of the great practitioners of mridangam and how they have impacted the world around them through their talents.
In order to get the most from instructor Bombay C N Balaji, students should come with a desire to learn about the mridangam and a dedication to the years of practice needed to master all it is capable of. While this course is short-term, the process of mastering the instrument is not. Students who are truly invested in their musical future will need to be ready to commit to the process as taught by Bombay C N Balaji.
ABOUT THE TEACHER: Bombay C N Balaji is a renowned mridangam player with 40 years of experience in the field. After decades of learning from gurus, Bombay C N Balaji has a deep respect for the relationship between student and instructor. He expects full commitment from his students as he guides them through the process of learning the components required to be a great mridangam player. Beginning his studies in his youth, Balaji first performed with professional artists at the age of eleven accompanying the violin maestro Prof. T N Kirshnan and A grade artist from All India Radio, Prasar Bharati. Balaji has performed with many musical exponents while touring in the USA, Far East, Middle East, and Sri Lanka. Balaji has also given numerous lectures and demonstrations encompassing the intricacies of rhythm and highlighting the greatness of legendary percussion artists in the field.
Students enrolling for this course on ipassio can be sure that they receive individual attention from the teacher, as the class strength is limited to 1 or 2 students. It also gives teachers the opportunity, to gauge their students progress in depth and make changes whenever and wherever required, to ensure the student gets the maximum out of this course. Since this course is detailed, students get the advantage of learning intricate details about this art form. The limited strength of the class also ensures that there is a strong bond between the students and their teacher clearing out any inhibitions that the student might have. The sustained guidance available from the teacher ensures that the student does not deviate from set goals or targets. As an introductory course, there are no required prerequisites before enrolling. Students will need to bring a pen and paper for taking notes to each lesson. This course is part of an educational series including three additional courses; Basics of Mridangam, Intermediate Mridangam, and Advanced Mridangam - Playing Professionally.
