Course Summary

This course is the third and final course of the three-level in-depth curriculum of Bharatanatyam. In the previous two courses (for beginners and intermediate-level students), the students have gradually learned to perfect their body postures and movements, hand gestures, expressions, and the art of dancing in rhythm.

The previous two courses have taught them to speak the language of dance. Now, they will learn to create verses in that language. In this course, the students learn in detail the end-to-end process of composition and presentation for dance items such as Varnam, Jaavali, Padam, and Thillana.

About the Course

The highlights of this course include -

  • Varnam: The advanced level starts with learning the Varnam. That is the longest dance stretching between 30 to 40 minutes. It will be a composition describing the attributes, avatars, and stories of Gods or Goddesses. It has two parts. One part tells a story with sung words, and the other focuses on movements that match the melody and rhythms without using words. The first half of the Varnam will be in a little slow or medium speed and the second half will be completely fast.
  • Jaavali: Imagine a dance that shows lots of feelings. That's Jaavali. It's all about expressing emotions through dance without needing to say anything.
  • Padam: Padam is like a slow and emotional dance. It often talks about love in its words. The dancer gets to show many different feelings of a character through their movements and expressions.
  • Thillana: Towards the end of the performance, there's Thillana. This dance is mostly about rhythms. It has special patterns and a few lines of lyrics, and it's known for the way it uses rhythmic sounds.
