Nuances of Ghazal singing for the Intermediate Level

Q: How much time should a student devote to self-practice on a daily basis?

This course will require practice time outside of lessons. Time spent practicing may vary from 15 minutes per day to an hour, depending on a student’s level of interest. Students who wish to become professional singers will need more hours of practice per day using a different set of exercises and materials than students who are seeking to learn singing as a hobby. A detailed structure of practice for each student will be discussed and explained during class.

Q: What if a student is unable to attend an upcoming class?

The student is required to inform the teacher about his/her absence from a particular session, two days prior to the class. In such a case, the teacher will reschedule the class and conduct the rescheduled class on or before the end (i.e. Saturday) of the ensuing week or such other time as may be mutually decided between the teacher and the student. In case the student misses to give two days prior notice about his/her absence to the teacher, then the decision to conduct another class for that student is completely based on the teacher’s discretion.

Q: How long will a teacher take to revert to students’ queries after class hours?

Students should get a response within 24 hours if the teacher is not preoccupied or traveling.

Q: What if the teacher wishes to reschedule a class?

In case the teacher is unavailable for the scheduled class, he/she will inform the students two days prior to the class. About the Course

After having analyzed the student's existing proficiency level and expectations from the course, the teacher will broadly include the following elements in the course:

Students will have the option to learn the ghazals of their choice.
Students will be taught some of the popular ghazals of stalwarts such as Farida Khanum, Mehdi Hassan, Ghulam Ali, Jagjit Singh, and Hariharan, to name a few.
Students will have the option to learn between 10 and 20 Ghazals in total. They will be provided with feedback on the nuances of singing to help them prepare for musical performances or to record their music for their social media channels.
Sargam behind the key phrases will be explained to help students decode complex ghazals with ease.
Constant guidance on pronunciation, expression, vocal dynamics, and voice projection.

About the Teacher

Dr. Shruti Sargam is a trained Ghazal and Sufi singer. Born in an illustrious lineage of Dhrupad vocalists from the Darbhanga tradition, she was privileged to grow up in a musically rich atmosphere where she explored different genres of music.

Specializing in Ghazal singing, Shruti has completed "Sangeet Shiromani" from the Faculty of Music and Fine Arts, University of Delhi. She also holds a Senior Diploma in Hindustani Classical Vocal music from Prayag Sangeet Samiti, Allahabad.

She has performed live across India in numerous stage shows. She was the guest artist on the popular weekly show, “Shukra hai Shukravar hai” on AIR FM Rainbow. She was awarded "Sur Sartaj" in 2012. A versatile singer with varied experience in the music industry, she has lent her voice to various radio and TV jingles like Mega Cabs, Discovery Channel’s Incredible India Campaign, Tupperware, Big Bazaar, and Dabur Gulabari, to name a few.
