A Comprehensive Course in Playing Guitar - Open to All

The lesson plan provides a comprehensive foundation in guitar playing, enabling students to explore their creativity, master techniques, and understand the theory necessary to create and perform music confidently. 

The classes are designed to grow your passion and love for guitar. By the end of the course, you will not only learn everything about the guitar but will also be able to play your favorite songs and create your own music.

I. Guitar Anatomy and Techniques

• Tuning
  • First, know your guitar and its various parts. And then learn how to tune your guitar using various methods (standard tuning, drop tunings, and alternate tunings) and tuning devices (tuners, tuning apps).
  • This course will provide you with hands-on practice with tuners, tuning by ear, and understanding harmonics.
• Notes on the Guitar
  • You will get familiar with fretboard notes and their locations. You will learn the chromatic scale, exercises to locate notes quickly across strings, and tips for memorizing the fretboard.
• Picking Technique
  • You will learn the correct picking technique for efficient playing. Exercises for downpicking, upstrokes, and alternate picking; focus on proper hand positioning.
• Tones
  • You will understand how to create and manipulate tones using different guitar settings and amplifiers. You will learn to experiment with tone controls, pedals, and pickups for a variety of sounds.
• Sitting Posture
  • It is essential to be comfortable with the instrument. This requires you to get the correct sitting posture during the practices. In this course you will learn to sit in the correct posture to avoid injury and maximize comfort. The lesson plan includes demonstration and exercises to maintain ergonomic positioning while playing seated.
• Performing Posture:
  • Guitarists do not necessarily sit and perform. They also have to maintain standing postures. In this course, you will learn to adapt comfortable posture for standing performances. You will learn to adjust strap height, body positioning, and balancing the guitar for fluid movement on stage.
• Strumming Patterns
  • The goal of this lesson is to Master essential strumming patterns for various music styles. You will learn and practice different strumming techniques (downstrokes, upstrokes, syncopation, and muted strumming).
• Alternate Picking
  • Alternate picking helps to develop speed and accuracy. The lesson plan will include speed drills, exercises across strings, and introduction to more complex rhythms.
• Sweep Picking
  • You will learn the technique for playing arpeggios fluidly. The focus will be on learning to play simple arpeggio sweeps, gradually building speed and incorporating into solos.
• Tapping
  • You will learn the two-handed tapping technique for modern guitar playing. Practice tapping exercises for single and multi-string sequences.
• Finger Picking
  • Mastering fingerpicking for classical, folk, and contemporary styles. Practice sessions on fingerstyle patterns, thumb independence exercises, and combining melody with bass notes.
• Hammer-ons & Pull-offs
  • You will learn adding fluidity to your playing by mastering hammer-ons and pull-offs. Exercises for strengthening fingers, improving speed, and incorporating these techniques into riffs and solos.
• Using a Metronome
  • Developing timing and rhythmic consistency using a metronome. Exercises at different tempos, increasing speed while maintaining accuracy.
• Gear & Tools
  • You will learn about essential guitar gear, including picks, capos, slides, pedals, and tuners. Exploration of different tools, how they affect sound, and when to use them.
• Guitar Maintenance
  • Learning basic maintenance to keep your guitar in top playing condition. Cleaning, restringing, adjusting action, intonation, and troubleshooting common issues.

II. MUSIC THEORY & SONGWRITING

• Covers
  • You will learn to play songs by your favorite artists. Breaking down the structure, chords, and rhythms of popular songs.
• Composition
  • Learn to create original music. Writing riffs, constructing chord progressions, and arranging songs using guitar.
• Guitar Solos
  • You will learn to develop expressive soloing techniques. Learning famous solos, improvising over backing tracks, and applying techniques like bends, slides, and vibrato.
• Rhythm Playing
  • Building strong rhythm guitar skills. Exploring different rhythmic patterns, strumming techniques, and syncopation.
• Ear Training
  • Developing the ability to identify and reproduce melodies and chords by ear. Interval recognition exercises, transcribing simple songs, and playing along with music.
• Scales
  • Mastering major, minor, and modal scales. Exercises to improve scale fluency and incorporating scales into improvisation and soloing.
• Arpeggios
  • Understanding and using arpeggios in your playing. Exercises across multiple string sets, integrating arpeggios into solos and chord progressions.
• Open & Barre Chords
  • Learning the essential chord shapes. Exercises to switch between chords smoothly, exploring different voicings, and applying them in songs.
• Circle of Fifths & Fourths
  • Understanding the circle of fifths and how it applies to key changes and chord progressions. Exercises on chord movement and modulating between keys.
• CAGED System
  • Mastering the CAGED system to unlock the fretboard. Breaking down each chord shape, connecting scales with chord shapes, and using the system for soloing.
• Sheet Music
  • Learning to read and interpret sheet music. Reading exercises, sight-reading simple pieces, and understanding notations like rests, ties, and dynamics.
• Time Signatures
  • Understanding and applying different time signatures. Exercises in 4/4, 3/4, 6/8, and irregular time signatures like 7/8 and 5/4, improving rhythmic versatility.

With over 3 years of experience, Priyanshu Choudhary has successfully taught guitar to students of all ages and skill levels, both in English and Hindi. Having conducted over 250 hours of lessons, he has worked with students from India and abroad, helping absolute beginners achieve fluent guitar playing within six months.
