Intermediate and advanced level students will be brushing off their basics initially and will then delve deeper into the intricacies of the dance form. Hip hop, both a musical genre and culture, was developed in the 1970s when block parties in New York, especially in African American young people living in the Bronx, grew increasingly popular. DJs' percussive breaks of popular songs were performed at block parties, with two turntables and a DJ mixer, in which they could make intervals from two versions of the same record, rotating between the one and the other. The first developments in hip hop emerged with the large availability and affordability of recording technology and drum machinery.
