  • About the Course

This course will include practice in talas and expand the students’ understanding of applying the rhythm of these talas to mridangam playing. As students learn to apply the talas (the three, four, five, and seven beat cycles used in the Carnatic music system) to their music, their innate ability to tap into the rhythm of sound will strengthen as well. Balaji will work with students to develop their ear for rhythm through guided practices, suggested listening and demonstrations. While it takes years of practice and dedication to master Mridangam rhythm, this course provides the educational foundation upon which musicians will build their unique style.

Mridangam has seen an evolution in the kind of wood it is made from, which has led to a significant increase in its durability. Presently, its body is constructed from the wood of the jackfruit tree. The tala (rhythm) system has also evolved alongside the development of the mridangam.
