Course Summary

Would it not be fascinating to learn and understand rhythm, as practiced in Indian Music in general, and particularly South Indian Classical Music?

Here is a great opportunity to be part of a very structured and methodical way of understanding the rhythmic nuances, offered by renowned musician and experienced Guru Vidwan Bombay C N Balaji.

This is a beginners course and is available for all who are interested to know and appreciate rhythm. So, this course is open to learners across all performing arts disciplines, including vocal music, dance and percussion.

Classes will involve students to recite the rhythmic pattern vocally. Numbers, which we are all so familiar with, will be the starting point for these recitations.

Once that is understood, the equivalent rhythmic patterns for the numbers, will be used to recite the various structured exercises. These exercises involve simple, medium and advanced level rhythmic patterns at varying speeds.

Finally, there will be a deeper understanding of how this rhythm fits seamlessly into a.particular song. The song could be anything from a daily chant, a film song, a ghazal, a bhajan, an abhang, or a Carnatic classical Kriti, which will be demonstrated by the Guru. Understanding the inherent rhythmic aspect of the song, makes one appreciate the melody and rhythm of the song that much more profoundly.

At the successful completion of this course, the student is free to decide on whether to pursue this further by actually learning to play all these and more rhythmic patterns in the king of the percussion instrument “Mridangam”. The courses in this regard, for a.beginner, intermediate, advanced and professional levels are offered separately by Bombay C N Balaji.
