Popularly known as Tagore songs, this genre of singing encompasses all the musical creations by the Bengali polymath Rabindranath Tagore. Compiled in a book titled ‘Gitabitan’, there are 2243 compositions. These soulful renditions are capable of inciting a diverse range of emotions. Rabindra Sangeet touches on many themes, covering spirituality, devotion, nature, humankind, love, patriotism, arts, and much more.
Although those who understand Bengali can relate to the lyrics, even Non-Bengalis find these songs satiating to the soul. The music composed by Tagore was inspired by Hindustani, Carnatic, Western (Scottish Ballads and Christmas Carols), and Bengali folk music. Rabindra Sangeet incorporates musical instruments like the Tabla, Tanpura, Flute, Ektaara, Esraj, Dotaara, Khol, Sitar, Piano, and Pump organ. He had put all these efforts into justifying his poetic expression.
