Understanding the Instrument
The course begins with the structure of the Sarod, how it is tuned, and how to hold it. Students learn proper hand positioning and basic tone production. The focus is on building ease and familiarity with the instrument.
Basic Techniques
Right-hand picking (Jod and Jhala) and left-hand sliding (Meend) are introduced. Exercises build coordination between both hands. Teachers provide feedback on grip, angle, pressure, and movement.
Alankars (Musical Exercises)
Students practice Alankars using Sa-Re-Ga-Ma patterns. Exercises improve finger control, speed, and pitch accuracy. The level of difficulty is adjusted based on student performance.
Introduction to Ragas
The course includes basic compositions in Raga Yaman and Raga Bhupali. Each raga is taught with its scale, characteristic phrases, and structure. Students learn to play fixed compositions (bandish) within these ragas.
Understanding Rhythm (Taal)
Students learn rhythm cycles such as Teentaal and Dadra. Counting, clapping, and foot-tapping are used to internalize the structure. Playing within the taal is gradually introduced.
Improvisation Basics
Students are introduced to Alaap, Taan, and Jhala. Improvisation is guided through repetition, listening, and teacher feedback. Recordings are used to help students recognize phrases and mood.
Performance Preparation
Students prepare a basic performance piece. The teacher helps correct notes, timing, and expression. Final recordings or live sessions are reviewed with detailed comments.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to play basic compositions in two ragas, understand two taals, perform right and left-hand techniques, and demonstrate basic improvisation. They will have a personal practice routine and be ready for intermediate-level training.
