About the Teacher
Sougata Roy Chowdhury hails from an art and music-oriented Bengali family. His father, Prof. Sarbari Roy Chowdhury, was an eminent sculptor, and his mother, Smt. Ajanta Roy Chowdhury is an Indian classical vocalist of the Agra Gharana.
Sougata started to learn sarod at the age of 10 with Ustad Dhyanesh Khan, son of Sarod Legend Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. After the untimely demise of Dhyanesh Khan, he continued his study with his elder brother, Ustad Aashish Khan, for some time until finally pursuing tutelage under his Guruji, Pandit Santosh Banerjee - a sitar and surbahar player and one of the main disciples of Ustad Mohammed Dabir Khan, the last descendent of the Miyan Tansen family. At present Sougata is training with the senior disciple of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Guru Pandit Rajeev Taranath.
Sougata has been performing, teaching, and conducting workshops actively all across the world since the year 2000. Notable accolades gathered by Sougata include being honored as one of the best young artists of the decade by the Saptak Music Festival, Ahmedabad in October 2010 and being awarded as Finalist of the Aga Khan Music Awards, Lisbon 2019.
